That "awful" defense of ours...

He doesn't need a turn his post was in response to all the comments about how terrible our defense is. Why dont some of you understand that?

Did you post this in response to the "Banks sucks" comments? Or the "our defense sucks" comments? You could have.

Our defense did some things right too, as you pointed out, but you and many others dont want to talk about that unles there's a "but" following it.

He didn't say our defense is Elite and needs zero improvement.

I thought this was about defining expectations amongst us fans. Without objective conversation, we’re going to remain a bipolar fanbase, which supports everyone staying irritated.

This win and also the struggle were a total team effort. All phases contributed to the outcome.

Great win and glad to get it....But this was Miss State. They had played Southern Miss....Northern Illinois...Alcorn State....and a iffy AZ State....

IMO they will lose to A&M next week....less than 50 percent chance of winning at Florida.....lose to Texas....lose to UGA....lose to Missouri.....lose to Ole Miss.

Bama held Georgia to 21.
ASU held State to 24.

Our defense is tied with Southern Miss for holding Ms State to 34.
Our defense is one better than Marshall’s (45) holding Georgia to 44.

We have to create turnovers to keep up because we’re unable to get enough stops for the offense to keep up, while scoring 50+ ppg.

Your turn again.
How many of the 34 was because of turnovers I’ll answer… 21… no muff punt and take away the drops and we likely beat ms state but 21+ but keeping going off… our awful defense only leads the nation in sacks and force fumbles and is top 5 in TFL and top 10 in passes defended… not perfect by any stretch but far from as bad as some of you like to act like…

I’m glad you answered your own question. I only remember that muffed punt leaving State in scoring position.

I agree there is plenty of good stats to be positive about. I hope we don’t face any more run attacks as strong as Georgia’s and Miss State’s. If our defense could just close in quicker on the dump passes and QB scrambles, we’d have looked like a top 5 team against State.

NCAA rankings:
Tennessee’s defense is 107th in points/ game allowed. 81st in yards/ game.

I understand we played many backups in the UAB and ETSU games so this doesn’t indicate end of year statistics. My takeaway from the scoring defense and the forced turnovers is that we do not have a top 10 defense but also not a middle of the road defense either. Hopefully this will improve as we gain experience.

No you didn't. I believe you're smart enough to know exactly what "this" is about. If objective conversation were all you are interested in you wouldn't be on this board or in this thread. Sell that BS to someone else.

Lol, love the last paragraph. Hope you don't mind if I steal that.

...that did this:

That turrible defense that gave us 14 of the 34 points we scored in regulation. Not just with the West/Josephs scoop & score above, but also Colton Hood's pick six in the first half.

That awful defense that harried and harrassed Miss State's QB so badly, he ended up with a QBR of 22.9. (!!!!!!) [our Joey was once again in the upper 60s]

That poor defense that was at least half of the equation for a victory...on the road...against an undefeated SEC foe.

Man, to have our problems. We are blessed to have our problems.

Go Vols!

They had several injuries yesterday. If those guys are out a while, State could implode

We’re 4-1 and control our future - every remaining game is winnable but they will be fights. My hope for the D is to get healthy and improve on our 3rd down efficiency. We’re getting sacks and tackles for loss but we need to improve on getting teams off the field…letting teams off the hook on third down wears on the D but even worse, it keeps the O on the sidelines and prevents them from getting and staying in rhythm.

If we finish 11-1 or 10-2, I don’t care where the D or O is rated.

Listen, the defense did some really good things yesterday, but they have got to do better against the run. It cost us badly against uga and against msu. Our offense doesn't give the defense much rest so those drives that they get pounded by a bruising back take a toll. I am not sure if the game plan was to make them beat us on the ground, but they darn near did. With the quality o-lines we are about to face this is gonna be a problem that needs fixing fast.

Every game is a different animal. Comparing stats in scoring is just as bad scores of common opponents. It’s almost never a true indicator of teams and doesn’t work. GBO

You may be right.. I get lost in the antics from time to time. It was not my intention when I logged on to be a pain in anyone’s ass.

Let's just get this out there, the defense is what is is. It can be gamed and beat but they play loose and fast. That gets turnovers. If the offense is up to the task, let's have it.
And also, the defense won the game on the 4 yard line.

The first int got returned and then the refs gave them a cheap personal foul on heard that started the drive well into fg range… then I thought the second int was going to the house before Joey made a great effort to slow him down… either way the defense is not awful… we have got to improve but they are playing hard and creating big plays and opportunities for us as well..

Go Vols!

Would it also be true if the defense had not allowed Miss State to score the Vols would have won even without the 14 points?

Currently there are 12 SEC teams in the top 50 for total defense, but Tennessee is no where to be found...

Not sure about you, but I was hoping for a little better!
