The TFP has produced the best sportswriters to come out of Tennessee in recent years.
So of course the article doesn't say how much Gruden wants for his assistants and what UT has offered--which is crucial to know. Are they far apart? Must be a significant difference, and this might explain why some are saying the deal is off and some are saying that it's not and might/will get done.
Here are two numbers of obtain: how much did Kiffin get for assistant salaries, and how does it compare to what Gruden is being offered? I believe that Kiffin got a LOT of money for his staff, but don't recall the number. But it was high. I'm also curious to know what Saban's staff is getting--a number that Hart could use as leverage. I'm all for giving the guy enough money for a good staff, but we shouldn't be paying $5 million a year, say, for staff. At some point we have to draw the line with Gruden, or maybe boosters just keep ponying up the dough. It just shows how absurd college football has gotten.
Personally had Andy Staples tell me basically the TFP management was a disaster when he worked there and they didn't treat people awesome... That's putting it mildly... Heard similar stories from David Jenkins, so tifwiw...
pay the assistants whatever gruden wants---UT has plenty of money to pay top $.
Does it??? Last time I heard the AD isn't in great financial shape and the school just released it some money but not enough to just say...heck UT can afford it!! Other peoples money is the easiest to spend on this site.
At the end of the day UTs powers at be are going to have to leverage this hire so having to decide if its worth it. If Gruden had a Saban like CFB resume prior to going to bama then it would be an easy decision imo. But he doesn't so.....????

IMO, there's no way you pass on Gruden because of the staff budget. They can't be that far apart. The fans would run Hart out of town if they found out he didn't hire Gruden because he wanted an extra million or so to hire an all star staff. I can see a $3-4 million difference being a issue but there's no way it's that much. When you make a hire of this magnitude, you don't handcuff the coach from the get go. These coaches (Saban,Gruden, etc.) have huge egos and won't compromise that much because they are proven at what they do. So if Gruden doesn't come here, the reason better not be the staff budget or Hart will feel the wrath of the Grudenites!
