I started seeing this more and more Texas trying to implement putting power T on merchandise. I thought the T was trademarked.

They are different Ts.

Maybe our loss of the interlocking U & T led to our downhill slide :birgits_giggle:

We are so dispirited now with the current state of affairs with the football program that next they will get our checkerboard without us protesting.

The University of Tennessee SOLD the rights to the interlocking U and T to the University of Texas. Texas had began using it some years ago, Tennessee objected, and it went to court. During that trial, Texas said they would pay Tennessee to have exclusive rights to the logo. Of course, Tennessee obliged due to the financial payoff. Kind of interesting.

really? I heard they had actually laid a copyright on it first or something, but if that's the case that is quite interesting

My daughter goes to UT and one of her professors was telling her several weeks ago about what happened with UT and UT.

Texas won the Power T logo trademark suit years ago
That's why Tennessee went to the interlocking logo

According to the professor, Tennessee took Texas to court because Texas had begun using the interlocking UT. During the course of that trial, Texas offered to pay off Tennessee for exclusive rights to the interlocking version. Tennessee obliged and has not used the interlocking UT since. I think if you look at anything Tennessee has put out in recent years, you will not see the interlocking UT.

right, i knew the interlocking UT hasnt been used in a long while. Thanks for the background info on it.

kinda sad we sold it, but back when it happened i feel a lot of universities would have gone that route for the money, since too they'd be able to sweep it under the rug without anyone really noticing till the logo was worked out of the system

do it now though - i.e. the whole seattle seahawks and Texas A&M copyrighting 12th man - and the sports media picks it up and everyone knows about it; and you would look even worse as anchors talk about "selling school tradition" or something on around the horn...:unsure:

Then their football players will come take our cheerleaders off the field and take advantage of them.
