OL Gandy tore his knee playing basketball yesterday. Out for the season. Would have likely been the starting C next fall.

1. why is gandy out playing basketball, he is an offensive lineman!!

2. looks like one of them talented freshman is gonna have to step up.

3. out o-line might be our weakest point on the team and now this happens.

Re: freshman stepping up....the center calls the blocking assignments at the line of scrimmage. Do you seriously believe a freshman, with no experience in our offense or playing against college defenses can do this? This isn't simply a blocking position. That makes this more tragic that it appears.

What is it with our lineman playing basketball? One gets in a fight and gets suspended, another tears his knee. If you ask me, these guys need to stop playing basketball. Geez, that is horrible news.

I agree. I would think Fulmer will put an end to this whole basketball thing.

Yeah, I guess that Fulmer can't control what these guys do in their spare time, but maybe he should start trying. We just can't afford to have all these problems in the off season because you know that we will have the more than normal average of injuries during the season.

Man this sucks!!!!! We will need him this year and he goes and tears his knee....That's terrible....I think Fulmer needs to start doing something about this basketball thing....We've lost two people due to playing basketball...Stick to football guys, that's what you're at UT to do

Maybe it's because they like to play? But big guys playing hoops can be asking for trouble sometimes. We've got all preseason to have somebody ready to be giving snaps, it can be done. Don't start freaking out. Yet.

Hey, I know Josh McNeil will be a freshman, but good grief, he was rated the #1 center in the whole dadgum country. Wouldn't surprise me to see him in there against UAB. I think the OL is going to surprise some people come Fall. We'll be ok! :twocents:

Don't think you'd ever see a big tackle move inside to play center. You actually have to have good feet to play center.

Ligon and Parker will fight for the Center job in the spring along with Cameron Mayo and this fall McNeil will get his shot.
McNeil has a very good shot at winning the starting slot since that is the only position he has played. He is already use to callng the blocking assignments. The other thing is just because UT likes to use the Center to call blocking assignments doesn't mean they cannot have one of the experienced Guards do the calling until the Freshman is ready.
The Offensive line is not thin by any means but it does have alot of players who don't have much game experience but they are talented.

I will reiterate that the OL will be OK this Fall. I think there will be a lot of emphasis placed on these guys in the Spring.

And I think McNeil and Scott will figure in early this Fall.

I think a smart move would be to move Smith there for the time being and help work McNiel in. I still think were strong there. I know we have guys that will step up.

ligon and young will be in it for center. parker and smith are guards for sure and mayo will not be close to big enough. one of these will be the starting center while the other will be the 1st backup for both guards. mcneil will start, but probably not till later on in the year.

young is a utility ol. he can be a center and has been talked alot by the coaches as a potential player at center. he will most likely be in the gandy role with ligon as the starting center and mcneil as an early backup
