Try Sotol.
20110504sotolstory.jpg

It is made from the Dasylirion wheeleri, Asparagaceae (commonly known as Desert Spoon or, in Spanish, sotol) instead of blue agave. Mellow, tasty, equivalent to higher priced boutique tequilas.

With yesterday being National Tequila Day I wanted to see what some of y'alls favorite tequila brands. Because it's summer and its freaking hot, I've been making homemade margaritas and am using Patron Reposado. After doing a little research I've seen that you can buy really good tequila for less than I'm spending on patron. Anyone else make homemade margaritas? If so, what's your recipie?

Here's mine:

2 oz 1800 Reposado
1.5 oz Cointreau
1 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
a dash of simple syrup

Shake well and strain into a margarita glass with ice.

I also really like Don Julio Anejo for sipping.

I believe only Mezcal has the worm not Tequila.

Tequila is a type of mescal but must be at least 51% blue agave-(in America called Aloe)-and Mexican law prevents adding worms.

Mezcal is not tequila because it can be any mix of agave. And you can get it with a worm added.

I din't care.

Like making a deal outta what's Tennessee Whiskey vs Kentucky Bourbon vs moonshine. They're all corn mash distilled liquor. They do not tsste the same. The cheaper they are the more fire in the swaller, like with mezcal.

Pass the bottle, swallow the worm, quitcher bellyachin about blue agave chauvinism.

:)

Kinda like George Dickel ain't Tennessee whiskey. If you can't run with the big dogs stay on the porch.

Actually, Dickel is Tennessee Whiskey.

Dickel and Jack Daniels are the only two distilleries that employ the Lincoln County Process and thusly are the only "Tennessee Whiskies".

A whiskey fight in Tennessee - Chicago Tribune

Prichaards doesn't use the Lincoln county process but it is sold as Tn whisky. Why? Because a bunch of lawyers decided that's the way it is. JD tried really hard to get Dickel banned from marketing as Tn Whiskey.

Personally I don't need a bunch of lawyers and politicians telling me what Tn whiskey is.

These are seriously old school battles. It's like the French and their requirements for wine.

There's a place at EPCOT in Disney, Cava Del Tequila, that has an avocado margarita. I know it sounds gross but it is an awesome drink. If your ever at Epcot, run into the Mexico pavilion and grab one. I share it with my wife because it's expensive and too much avocado gives me indigestion.
