Tennessee's offense by the numbers following Week 5

Never understood why people are hating on time of possession. I think this offense and Heupel could care less. “Oh no we scored 45 point in one half but only had 8 minutes TOP, the sky is falling again.” Laughable
I think the general concern, which is not always unfounded, is that you risk wearing out the defense. In our case, the defense has been better than I expected this year.

TOP is concerning especially with our defensive depth. I must say that I'm encouraged by the fact that in the second half last week we were able to hold the ball to the extent that for the game the numbers were much closer.

UT goes 3 deep on the DL. They've played 5 or 6 guys at ILB. They have two deep at DB which isn't generally as much a concern when it comes to downs played.

UT scored about 28 pts in the 1st qtr in about 3 minutes of play clock. I'll take that from now on.

I think the thing that remains to be seen, and it is a concern to me until it isn’t , can we run a 4 minute offense to close out a game when we’re leading by a touchdown or less and a couple first downs wins the game? We’re not going to be able spread out people with the threat to throw in the last 3 minutes and we’re trying to kill the clock.

Outside of sacks and time of possession (which is part of the hurry up offense), very few of those numbers aren't drastic improvements

The sacks are (mostly) the product of the Pitt game. Over a third of sacks given up on the season were in that game. Cooper was out and Spraggins simply isn't a starting caliber player, at least not at this stage. Missing our top 2 RBs probably created an issue in pass protection as well. Also, Carvin is not good at center.

I would think that the other team needs to be concerned about their defense .

Maybe bc the defense played with the worst offense in the country last year. All those 3 & outs prepared them. Only difference now is the defense gets an energy boost from a scoring offense.

I think they are just a lot better coached mostly.

But you know I am really worried about the taxes I will have to pay on that 10 million dollars I just won

RDu#14,Why not keep playing fast and with deep shots? Spurrier said that "Why should I slow us down because you cannot stop us when we play fast?In other words,it's your job to stop us,not ours.

Exactly I've always thought it looks better having the least amount of possession time while winning.

The lack of depth narrative is really overblown. As you note it’s not really true for defense. On offense, the OL is thin and we have had injuries that have made the problem worse. Other positions are not bad - arguably 3 deep at RB, plenty of receivers, okay at TE.

The biggest problem is the big hole in our 2021 freshman class that will need to be filled by transfers.
