Cam Newton bypassed by SEC for top annual honor - ESPN

Cam Newton is no Rafael Nadal.

But then, is John-Patrick Smith?

The SEC apparently holds Smith -- Tennessee's first four-time tennis All-American who finished the Vols' season ranked 10th in the nation -- in higher regard than the NFL's top draft pick, as the conference's athletic directors have made Smith the first Volunteer to win their male-athlete-of-the-year award since Peyton Manning in 1998.

Didn't see this posted and wasn't sure where to post it. Congrats to him...

Suck it Cam Newton. :)

i'm not "hating" on tennessee here, but that's an absolute joke. it really is.

if they didn't give it to newton, you'd think it would be michael roth.

Don't hate, he deserves it more than a paid-to-play,one and done laptop stealer. Congrats JP

Isn't Cam the only Heisman winner not to win this award? It's pretty damning when your own conference doesn't vote for you, especially considering all the records Cam broke!

It's for on and off the field. Smith was a great player and killed it in the classroom. And it's a shame that ESPN decided to run this article. What a slight it is to this kid.

i did not realize there was an academic component to this thing. in that case, i take back what i said.

I could end up eating my words, but I'm pretty sure it does. If not, apologies.

I'm sorry. I didnt realize Cam was a 4 time All Amercian in anything.

What's the joke? JP didn't steal a laptop and get kicked out of his original school? Or have his daddy pay for him to play?

Get real.

This kid is amazing on the court, a great student and a class act, I really cant see any one else that could be more deserving... its also nice to see this award go to one of the smaller sports(even though I never follow them)

Dude not everything is football. JP has made All American all 4 years in both singles and doubles. I play tennis for school and clubs, it's a very hard sport to play.

Newton is a cheated and doesn't deserve it. Tell me how a one time guy can beat out a guy who came in as a freshman from Australia and win All American 4 years in a row? That's unheard of...even in tennis. He's definitely going pro soon

First off, if academics are involved, that changes everything.

Secondly, try telling me with a straight face that this kid (great though he may be) had as good a year in his sport as cam newton or michael roth did in theirs.

If Newton wasn't a morally bankrupt POS with the IQ of a low end Billy goat, he walks away with it. However, he is so he didnt.

http://www.secdigitalnetwork.com/NE...offman-named-kramer-athletes-of-the-year.aspxThe article on the SEC website references classroom performance, so as gator said, that greatly affects who the award should go to. Cam had one of the single greatest seasons ever on the field. However, JPS did it on and off the field. No need to resort to bashing kids (no matter how much of a dirty cheat they are ).

"morally bankrupt" that is a good expression for Scam and Dad plus Auby...I think I heard that in Casey Anthony trial but great words.:hi:

Calling Cam Newton a "student" athlete would be a real stretch of the term. There's been a standing $1000 reward offered for more than half a year for one photo of Newton in a classroom at AU, and it's yet to be claimed.

If academics matter in this selection, Smith is far and away more deserving than Newton.

He deserves it, Cam had a hell of a season but JP goes down as one of the best tennis players in SEC history
