offer them 3 million and a 7 year contract and watch them line up for an interview!!!

We could pay that much, but we won't

"There's a fine line between ambition and delusion, and Tennessee appears to have crossed it with its list of top choices to replace Bruce Pearl."

Gawd that hurts to read.

That explains why Pearl was making more than Dooley. Good point.

I was referring to new hires specifically. When you start paying more for a new bball coach than a football coach then you are saying UTK is now a basketball school essentially.

You should.

I realize that not everyone makes rational decisions, but if I'm Jay Wright or Jamie Dixon and someone presents me with the opportunity to double my income, not have to live in Philadelphia/Pittsburgh anymore, and provide immensely better facilities and support, I don't know that I could say no.

yes, it does

No, it doesn't. Tennessee pays our football staff an absolute ton of money combined. Look at our facilities and the level of money it brings in. No one is going to start thinking we're a "basketball" school simply based on the basketball coach's salary.

It all depends on the situation. But it is easier to rebuild a basketball program than a football program due to the lesser amount of scholarship student-athletes. It just takes a couple recruiting classes as opposed to the numerous in football. This fact and it's easier to be successful in the SEC in basketball than football definitely support the "pay the football coach more money". But..... depending on the route we go we might have to pay more money for a basketball coach than Dooley's current salary.

I'm not saying anything about rebuilding or if winning is easier in basketball. I'm saying if we offer a basketball coach in excess of $2 million, no one will consider us a "basketball school" rather than a football school.

Butch Davis makes more than Roy Williams; is UNC a football school? No, it's a stupid argument.

He does? That surprises me.

I'll spot you the bucks and the facilities, but people need to get real about Knoxville vs. cities that spend $$ on, oh, I don't know, libraries, museums, restaurants, SIDEWALKS. The big spenders who shell out the cash for UT coaches should think about spending some of that money in Knoxville to make it a city people actually want to move to.

And, by the way, I live in Knoxville, so I'm not just blowing smoke. I'm a UT grad and a loyal fan, but this city has problems.

keep in mind that i am from Illinois and not Knoxville, but the few times i am in Knoxville (usually around twice a year) i find that this is true of the actual city itself, but once you get out of the city, I think it's a pretty nice area. Once you get out by the bluffs on Cherokee it's like a whole new place. Once again I'm not from there, just my very limited viewpoint.

There is some great natural scenery here, I'll grant you that. But I think that's true in a lot of places.
