Tennessee vs Virginia Tech Breakdown

One of our losses was a shared loss and Bama was a better team at the beginning of the season. The other two have 10 - 8 wins respectively. Not that much of a drop off. Also LSU doesn't have a single win over a team that is currently ranked.

Pollsters beg to differ.

BCS has VT 12 and LSU 13
AP has VT 11 and LSU 15

LSU hasn't exactly set the world on fire this year themselves. I don't see how saying we are on their level this year is a ridiculous statement at all.

LSU was 5-3 in the SEC and will finish as the 3rd team and play in the capital one bowl....So if you think Tech would finish as the 3rd best team in the SEC thats a Ridiculous statement...There is a reason why they put the #2 ACC vs. the # 6 SEC in the chic-fila

are you really trying to say that Bama is not a better team then tech now.....

Looks like this game will be won at the LOS.

seems pretty comaparable, so I belive Special Teams will play a role, and that has me worried

VT's a great special teams football team and we're not

No I am trying to say that Bama was a better team compared to themselves now that they don't have their stud LB. (I forgot which one got hurt), and they are just all playing at a lower level overall. If we played again, I would say that the score would be similar to last game, and the stats would be closer.

I think this is the most ridiculous statement, reasoning being, your comparing the rankings this year which does not translate over to what tech would finish in the SEC if they were in the SEC. You played your season in the ACC and LSU played theres in the SEC. Big difference, big gap in talent, athletes, coaching, facilities, fan base, and championships. Tech would finish 11th just ahead of vandy!

So you statement proves nothing, but just how accurate our assumptions are of tech fans...ignorant

If we were in the SEC we would either be right at or a little below LSU.

I went to VT last year and saw their team firsthand. Tyrod can do some incredible things and they have a star running back, but there is no way they would hold water in the SEC. Hardesty is built for SEC running down after down, not like those ACC teams. LSU would destroy VT

Ronaldo Mcclain has been there best LB for the past 2 years....and he is healthy

According to Sagarin LSUs strength of schedule is 18th is ours is 11th. Our record is identical. Our rank is all but identical, or SOS is all but identical, their losses are a little better than our losses, our wins are a little better than their wins. Its hard to call this anything but even unless you have a very strong bias.

I will say i think Tech can compete with most of the schools in the SEC on any given day but.....going to FL, Ala, Tenn, Ga, LSU back to back weeks they would break down and thats why I say they would be lucky to go .500

now this is the most ridiculous statement...you really got to be kinding me...their schedule got tougher after they played you guys...and guess what, they are still undeafeted with a chance to play for the national championship.

You know we are a much better than now than when we played them too? It isn't all about Hightower getting hurt.

edit: TT has been night and day difference ever since that last drive of the Nebraska game. It seems the proverbial light came on.

I understand and I apologize if you thought I was trying to tell the Vol fan base one way or the other..but I also like to have a educated football convo about the game coming up ...thats all.

I understand. It must be hard to find that on the Hokie Boards. lol

JK, I had to do it.

Wonder why its so high...maybe because you played alabama the number 2 team in the country. Wouldnt be in the top 20 if you didnt play bama...more than half of the SEC played bama this year...your wins are not better then theirs...what do you call a good win? marshall, miami not impressive, BC, East carolina- barely squeezed that off, maryland, can the schedule get any worse, nc state, UVA...the best win is nebraska, and thats not impressive considering it was an act from god on how you guys pulled that off.

Miami isn't impressive? Miami is 9-3 beat GT, Oklahoma, and USF. That is much more impressive that UT this season. LSUs best wins are UGA and Auburn and the UGA win was just as much a gift from God. Auburn only has 7 wins. LSU doesn't have a single win over an 8 win team all season. We have 4.

USF? haha....

I'll tell you what, we are going to get smoked by VT on special teams. Offense and defense I think we are pretty even, but the scale tips when it comes to special teams.

South Florida..they have a football team? They cant even win conference champs in the sorry conference they are in. Oklahoma, this may be one of the worst teams Stoops had this year, they barely finished .500. Miami, for them to be 9-3 while having the NCAA leader in ints Jacoby Harris, just validates how the competition is much much greater in the SEC.

Remember the talent gap between the SEC and ACC...better talent equals better competition. Something the ACC lacks. That is why there are several teams in the SEC that are 7-5. Year in and out the SEC finishes with 5 teams in the top ten in recruiting. ACC is lucky to have 2 and thats not until recently.

what is so good about their ST's this year?

Just so you Hokies know, I do not believe that anyone on this board thinks this game is a sure win for TN or will be any kind of an easy game. However, UT played 8 games in the toughest conference in College football and have a .500 record in it.
`
We played two potential NC teams and numerous others that are or were ranked in the top 25 at some point in the year. Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina, Ole Miss. Some ranked as high as number four.

So we are sitting at 7-5 having played 6 opponents of rank. Two of them top ranked.

You guys are at 9-3 having played 4 ranked teams. One of them top ranked.

Sounds to me like if you were in the SEC, you would be right around the same place we are which is NOT on the same tier as LSU at the moment.

Recruiting numbers don't mean much. Its all about who is recruiting them. It really doesn't matter who we recruit they all end up adjusting the rank to compensate. When we started recruiting Kam Chancellor he was moved up from a 2 to 3 star. The day Logan Thomas committed to us he was demoted from a 5 to a 4 star. Its like that for everyone. Whenever UF recruits a guy, Rivals just assumes they are a 4 star player. Rivals still hasn't figured out that the tidewater area is a goldmine for recruiting. Rivals has way to big of talent gaps from northern stats to southern states to be believed. I realize that high school football isn't big in New England and not a lot of prospects come from there, but Pennsylvania and Ohio kids always seem to be underrated.
