Tennessee vs The Maxims vs South Carolina

Larry's name had come to the attention Governor Gooch. Larry's father was a prominent man in Virginia society and so, when the Governor was ordered by London to raise a regiment of infantry, he turned to prominent families for the needed officers. Larry got the call to command one of the companies in the 43rd Regiment of Foot. Larry accepted the commission and sailed off with the rest of the regiment in 1739 for operations in the Caribbean Sea against the hated Spanish.

The nominal reason for this military action had much to do with the internecine wars, alarums and excursions of 18th Century Europe. A series of conflicts between England and Spain along with their various and shifting roster of allies had come to a head with an incident off the Florida coast in 1731. Captain Robert Jenkins of the brig Rebecca was sailing in Spanish waters when his ship was stopped and boarded by a detachment from the Spanish patrol boat La Isabela, commanded by Julio León Fandiño on suspicion of smuggling. Words were exchanged and eventually Fandiño drew his sword and relieved Jenkins of his ear.

The situation simmered for several years until finally England had enough and after Jenkins testified before Parliament brandishing his preserved ear, war was declared. The press seized on Jenkins testimony and the resulting conflict became known as “The War of Jenkins Ear.” Admiral Edward Vernon was given overall command of operations. Vernon settled on a strategy to disrupt Spanish trade in the Caribbean by assaulting various ports critical to the trade between Central and South America and Spain.

Things started out well for the British but then the fighting devolved into a series of confused and bloody affairs. Larry ended up participating in three efforts to take the port of Cartagena on the coast of what is now Columbia. All three failed due somewhat to stubborn Spanish resistance but mostly because the English forces were ravaged by yellow fever. Nearly ten thousand died. Larry survived and returned home with the few remaining colonists. He had served honorably and commenced construction of a manor house overlooking the James River.

Oh, did I mention that Larry (Lawrence) Washington named his home for Admiral Vernon?

Lawrence Washington contracted tuberculosis and died in 1752. None of his four children survived childhood so the manor house was left to his beloved half-brother, George. George was an up and coming land surveyor and soon carved out his own niche in both military and political service.

As Paul Harvey would say, “And now you know the rest of the story!

So how did the team do compared to the Maxims?

1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.

Maybe it is just something to do with the 2500-mile separation from their home state, but Vol quarterbacks from the Bear State (that's California for you folks from Tater Valley) seem to have a knack for making hammer-headed throws at exactly the wrong moment.

2. Play for and make the breaks. When one comes your way … SCORE!

Tennessee was in position to win or at least tie the game late in the forth canto. As with last week's game, mistakes ended that hope.

3. If at first the game – or the breaks – go against you, don’t let up … PUT ON MORE STEAM!

During Head Vol Dooley's tenure at Tennessee, the Vols have yet to win a game when they trail at half. That, by itself, is a damning statistic.

4. Protect our kickers, our quarterback, our lead and our ballgame.

*Grumble, cuss, grumble more* x 2

5. Ball! Oskie! Cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle … THIS IS THE WINNING EDGE.

Once again, there were points Saturday where Vol fans wondered if Tennessee's secondary could cover a five-foot board with five gallons of paint.

6. Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.

Last week: “Maybe benching Palardy earlier this year woke the kid up. Hope springs eternal.”

Alas, no.

A THIRTEEN-YARD PUNT???? Seriously???

7. Carry the fight to South Carolina and keep it there for sixty minutes.

Yet again, one final collapse by Tennessee's offense sealed the deal.

I still like Head Vol Derek Dooley. I really do. However 0-for-October is NOT the way I wish to spend my autumn afternoons in Volunteer land. I fully understand the mess he inherited in 2010 and applaud his efforts to fix it. I think the current edition of the Vols, much like their predecessors last year, have issues that go beyond “x's and o's.” They seem to lack that indefinable thing called “team chemistry:” a mutual will to not let their team down that separates the good teams from the bad and the great from the merely good.

“Snake-bit” seems to be the best metaphor.

This is One Man Gang … Good Day!

Thanks OMG, always a good read. Unfortunately our performance against the Maxims seems to be a case of repeating history. Thread needs sticky, before it gets lost in the "noise" of the FF.

And it's looking more and more like Dooley is our George B. McClellan. Organized, efficient, energetic, well liked, fed the troops, cleaned up the camps, drilled them beautifully . . . and couldn't beat R.E. Lee to save his life.

Disturbing analogy, Old Son. As I recall, McDowell begat McClellan who begat Pope who begat McClellan (again) who begat Burnside who begat Hooker. As dismal a list of generals as one can find in the annals of military history.

It took Abe five tries to find a winner - George Meade, AKA "That damned old goggle-eyed snapping turtle."

Excellent work.

I never imagined I'd want UT to find their Meade...

No clue what the poster prior is going for.

Mod: I don’t know where to place this message.

I wish to sincerely apologize to Freak, the Mods, and the Football Forum for my words during the game last Saturday. I was 100% wrong. That type of behavior is unacceptable. This is a fantastic website and I do appreciate the opportunity to come here for discussions of the Tennessee Volunteers. Please accept my humble apology,

Jackson

Great work, as usual.

For all your great Maxims posting, I hope Freak lets you use the VN private jet. On weekdays anyway.

Why do I envision something like this?

Now that's funny no matter who you are, LOL!

Another great job, as usual, my friend.

I appreciate and enjoy reading this aftewr every game.

Now you need to find a way to do something like this every week in the offseason because VN needs something else beside bash/fire CDD threads everywhere.

Military history is never a bad topic.

VFL...GBO!!!
