Tennessee vs Oregon: The Trenches

Of course it's always starts in the trenches.:eek:hmy:
My only concern is can we go all out for 60 minutes because that is what it will take.
Of course can the Ducks go all out for 60 minutes in the heat and humidity? I believe we can hang with them early but for how long?
We need to jump on the Ducks early!:clapping:
GO VOLS!

I'm not impressed by the fact that we've got bigger offensive linemen. Big deal: We had very big OL for the last several years under the Fulminator--and none of them could block! Va. Tech is a bigger team than Boise State--we see how that turned out. UT's offensive woes in recent years are party attributable to this outdated idea that you can still outmuscle people with the run game and throw 7 yard out patterns and win games. Saban wins with a mostly old-school offensive style--but he's an exception; otherwise, the game has changed.

So biggest guy always wins right? Does experience matter at all into the equation?

How many starts combined do the UT linemen have?

To me, the weight issue is for the most part a non issue. There is a reason our O-line has been rated as high as second in the country. Even if they are on the lighter side, they are the fastest and most agile line in the country...which is what is best for our offense.

Our D-line is small, but that only became an issue in one game last year...Stanford. And I respect Tennessee a lot, but their brand new O-line isn't as good as Stanfords was, and they don't have a Gerhart in the backfield. Our D-line than makes up for not being 300lbs with incredible speed and endurance. And besides, we'll play 8 or 9 D linemen (a few of which break the magic 300lb mark), and 7 or 8 linebackers. Getting worn out will most likely not be an issue.

Unfortunately I agree, the size issue is much overblown. Smaller D-linemen can be very effective if they are quick to shed blocks and be disruptive. In 2005 I think our o-line averaged 330 lbs and those guys couldn't get out of their own way. Fortunately for us, we have a very good o-line coach and our linemen, while inexperienced, are generally fairly agile for their size.

Success is never outdated and systems are far, far less important than how well you execute them.

tOSU, USC, Cal, LSU, OU, Stanford,.... just a few schools in addition to Bama that have recently had great success with pro-style power offenses. There's a lot of "romance" associated with spread O's right now but D's have made the adjustment and production has dropped back in line with other schemes.

There is a reason the NFL has not gone to the spread option or the end around spread sweeps and such... they aren't as difficult to defend as a well executed zone read play to a good power runner.

They lack experience and may not be ready for primetime... but don't underestimate the talent UT has on the OL right now... especially the younger guys.

Dude, no one responded about experience because they're debating size of our OL/DL vs. their OL/DL.

perhaps you need to read the exchanges again and decide for yourself. context is everything

of course it is. You're sad enough to troll a competitor's board. With that in mind, it's hard to imagine that you can't come with better and that we don't simply ignore you.

Thought I would challenge the wisdom of the OP by pointing at that experience is FAR more determinant than size when comparing line play.

i don't believe i've made a single post that could be called trolling. are you really so insecure as to prohibit good natured bantering between vol and duck fans?

seriously?

ability, quickness, speed, strength, technique, etc, etc, etc might come into play as well, but who knows.

I'm not prohibiting anything. I'm simply agreeing that context is everything. If we thought through the type of person it takes to come to a rival's board and imply people are stupid, we'd simply ignore you.

if i've done that it certainly wasn't intended, sorry if you took it that way, have a good day.

:lolabove: wow......if this is the case Oregon will be blown off of the line.

How many times have you made that statement before in your ungodly amount of posts you have? I hope that was your first and you are already drunk....

Look, I know you're dumb as a hammer, but you don't have to openly flaunt it for everyone else. I didn't say a damn word about any of that giving us an advantage. It was clearly mocking a post that tried to imply we have an edge based upon weight.

You haven't been around long enough to know when people are being sarcastic. Some of us are very tongue-in-cheek around here.
