Savor this game, win or lose. We have only played the #1 team in the country 17 times in our basketball history. A big percentage of those games came decades ago when we played Kentucky and couldn't even compete with them realistically. Recent history and the current state of affairs tells me that this game should be most awesome!

I kinda wish the Zags were a little healthier (i.e. 2 of the top 6 guys will be in street clothes) but it is what it is ... no excuses, just basketball.

And speaking of Rui Hachimura, one of my favorite all time "lines" came from the Ohio State board's NCAA round of 32 game thread.
-------
"Does anybody know if LeBron made a trip to Japan 19 years ago?"

Well, now you're making excuses in case you lose. Kind of interesting to go on another team's board and do that. You might want to research our situation and see what you find. Aside from that, Gonzaga has a great coach and a great program. I actually enjoy following them and am quite intrigued by their continued success. Much luck this year, except on Sunday.

I've been a visitor here at your place for a year now ... I've always liked Coach Barnes (he's a friend of Mark Few's ... at Texas they'd to the "secret" scrimmage every year but I like that at Tennessee they actually play games that count).

I was in the house last year (Nashville) and the previous year (Seattle) and know a bit about your depth. Sorry if you thought I was "whining" about GU's current lack of depth ... I wasn't. Or wasn't consciously whining.

I thought I'd communicated that I thought Sunday would be a great college basketball game, and it should be. Win or lose it's a great game to have on each program's resume.

Edited to add this quote from deepspringsvol in last month's volnation thread about the topic of Gonzaga not being at full strength. I agree with deepspringsvol, btw

"They will be tough out with or without a key player. Mark Few has plenty of talent but he has more than that the ability to get the most out of whoever he has and not matter who he does not." Zags lose big man for 8 weeks, shouldn't return until after they play Vols

Sorry, no offense taken or harm intended. I love that you all beat Duke, and quite frankly, that was a great college basketball game. I watched the Washington game.....felt like the Zags played a bit slower than they preferred, which might have played into the Huskies preference. Still, was surprised by the closeness. Is that correct, or were there other factors involved?

Washington's coach was Boeheim's right hand man for a couple of decades and the Huskies are in year 2 of playing the Syracuse zone. They are a good team, should dance this year (and are picked by some to win the Pac 12) and they played well the other night. Gonzaga was fortunate to win (and benefited from a couple of whistles ... not usually the case with Gonzaga ..... my opinion).

GU uncharacteristically played tentative on defense against UW and it appeared to me that they were very low on gas by the end of the game. Gonzaga was fortunate to get the "w". Many of Washington's points came from dribble penetration and GU's point guard (Josh Perkins) didn't get saddled with reach ins/slaps on the wrists or with the body fouls ... and stayed on the floor.

I'm VERY hopeful that Sunday's game will be more in line with this past Saturday's Creighton game than Wednesday's Washington game.

I noticed Walton giving the officials a hard time. Also, Auburn blew Washington out earlier in the year, but we all know basketball is a different animal. Never know what can happen.

As a GU fan, I think Washington played perhaps their best game of the year, and we played our worst. We shot ~20% below our average field goal percentage and had multiple defensive lapses that were uncharacteristic or lazy. The UW Zone also proved confounding since it took away most of our outside shots and don't have much dribble penetration in general. There might have also been some "overlooking" of UW since we have beet them by 20+ in the last couple years (both in Seattle) and we were looking ahead to Tenn and UNC.

Since Gonzaga is realistically playing about a 5.9 man rotation (It's the starters plus 2 guys who have been only seeing spot minutes in serious games) I think Tennessee will win if they stick with any kind of 3/4 or full court press, or if they just maintain a super fast and physical tempo. I think GU wins if the final 5 minutes still includes all the original starters and feature predominately half-court sets and coached plays.

Very excited for this game. If our performance against Kansas is any indicator, we'll give them one hell of a game.

When it comes to our bench play there is a huge fall off against the Zags. Our guys need somewhat more than a breather and we definitely have to have bench scoring. I hope our guys who come off the bench can develop their shots and play good D without all the fouls and turnovers.

Whoever gets the hot hand needs to shoot until they start missing. Have to have ice in their veins. We miss Turners shooting for sure. If the Zags are truly down a couple men due to injury it certainly can be a factor. The Zags with and inside game makes for a deadly team because you always have to be aware of the kick outs for all those 3's......

The Zags are shorthanded for this one but so are we. Turner was supposed to be the best 6th man in SEC, but it appears he may not play.

Ky took care of us handily in 2015 when they only had 7 rotational players. I expect Gonzaga to be much better than Kansas for this game, even with only 7 players, several of which are NBA caliber.

Zags will play their starting 5 for just about the whole game. The injury to Tillie, our highest returning scorer, limits our floor spacing and outside shooting considerably. He was both our tallest player and best 3pt shooter, and he played in the national championship game 2 years ago. The only subs we'll see against Tennessee (for a couple minutes) will be freshman Filip Petrusev and a former walkon named Jeremy Jones. I expect to see Gonzaga outscore TN in the first half, then be outscored in the second half. If healthy, I think both teams have a chance to play in the final 4.

I think most people outside of the fanbases of UK/Duke/UNC would much rather cheer on a Tennessee or a Florida than those traditional powerhouses. Barnes seems like an elite coach who will take you far, and if we're able to beat either TENN or UNC (our next 2 games) I think 90% of Zag fans would prefer to beat even the lower ranked UNC and see you guys succeed.

I think Fulky needs to develop his shot in the 10 ft range and take it when open. Dribble, Penetrate, not so much. Way to many turn overs last game for Fulky.
Pons needs to begin to come into his own. I think the talent is there. Go to his strengths. Cause some mismatches with him. Look to take it to the basket more often and some back door plays. See if you can get Jalen Johnson more involved. He has a good shot.

The Zags are really going to pressure the vols. Vols need to feed the hot hand early and often.
Bench play can be playing a role player. Bench players can also move into the starting rotation. Having at least 7 players who could also start is my optimal idea and 9 deep.

Zags play 7 and are ranked #1

The game should start to slow down for Fulky in last half of season when we need him to shine. I didn't really think he could play the position but starting to change my mind.

UT is 4-13 in 17 meetings against the number one team in the country and it should be a very good game as long as UT pounds the ball inside and limits the 3 point attempts...... Given the size of Gonzaga, could Kent see some minutes tomorrow if Alexander, Fulkerson and Walker all get into foul trouble?

Not likely to see Kent. He didn't even participate in the warmups versus A&M CC last Sunday. Neither did Turner.

BTW, the #1s beaten by UT are Kentucky, Memphis State, Kansas, and South Carolina. Bruce beat Kansas and Memphis. Ray Mears beat USC. I don't know what year TN beat #1 Kentucky. Maybe it was Wade in 1993 when TN scored 4 with seconds to go and down 3.

I remember that!

I remember that!

Allan Houston at the free throw line, made the first and intentionally missed the second. Corey Allen grabs the rebound, scores, gets fouled, and hits his free throw for the win.

Kentucky got their revenge in the SECT on the night of the blizzard. 101-40 at Rupp in Allan's final game. Wade should have been let go right after that game instead of keeping him for his 5-22 5th year. TN had to be PC instead of doing the right thing. Dickey dropped the ball. I wonder who the candidates would have been one year before KO made his S16 appearance in the TBA?
