Tennessee vs Georgia: How We Match Up (Heavily Moderated)

OP, believe you're pretty spot on. If we do come to play, it's going to come down to QB play. Don't know that QD has to be outstanding, but just cannot turn the ball over. Last season, I was holding out hope that Neyland would rattle Jalen Hurts, but that didn't happen. If we keep the game tight, Neyland will be rocking, and I like our chances to make the frosh make a frosh mistake. Everyone over looking us, and what we've "put on tape" this year has given them reason to over look us.

Also, maybe some of reason for Butch rant this morning was more for players..."us against the world"

The Dawgs are getting Eason back, but the way Fromm has played they don't need him. Our D has been really bad against the Run game so far. If the Dogs run it well on us, then they will continue to use the pass sparingly as they have done. We would have to match them score for score. No way I see that happening this year. It's going to be a long day for us in my opinion. Not a pasting, but a loss all the same.

Sure, we do. John Kelly is a difference maker. Marquez Callaway is a difference maker. Ty Chandler is a difference maker. Trey Smith is a difference maker. Trevor Daniel is a difference maker. There are others (Brandon Johnson, perhaps, Darrell Taylor, etc.). That's just off the top of my head.

The key is, we need to put our difference makers in position to make a difference, frequently, like every dang play practically. We need to maximize their impact this game.

We don't have 1 dominant player on defense... Good SEC players but not dominate;

GA is going to load the box and make TN throw the ball. We have nothing at TE and they will double team Callaway.. We do not have another real threat at WR.. Makes it very difficult.

I was watching him in the wildcat and screaming put 9 in the box. Which got me wondering. Are they setting us up for a Chubb trick play this week?

Anybody ever seen Chubb throw a pass?

UGA will have to come out and lay an egg honestly or we will have to force multiple TOs. ATP, UGAs best is clearly better than ours until proven otherwise.

Pepper, I'm not as sure about that as you are.

I think the defense we've seen these past two games (FL and UMass) is much stronger than the defense we saw start the season (Ga Tech and Ind St). In fact, take away two plays against FL (the hail mary pass and the 74-yard run by their freshman RB), and I'd say our defense has otherwise been strong the past two weeks. They'll be tested Saturday like they haven't been yet. We'll see if they can measure up.

Will especially help if we can get Fromm acting like a freshman QB. No one has found it yet, but there's gotta be a way to get him distracted and rustled. Maybe we can find it.

As for the other half the game, when we're on offense, I'd have to agree with you there. We're a one-trick pony. It's a really awesome pony (JKelly), but it's still very one-dimensional. That will have to change for us to have a shot. We need Dormady to catch up to the game.

I think Georgia played light out against Miss St.. OR maybe Miss ST. is not really as good as everyone thinks..Every year teams have games where they end up like no one expected..I hope Saturday is ONE of MANY for my beloved VOLS.....
P.S. - I know it is hard to believe but we are a lot better than we have shown so far...
NEED to play BIG BOY TENNESSEE FOOTBALL FROM HERE ON OUT...GBO

Should have explained myself better. UGAs beatdown of MSU is better than our OT win over GA TECH. Our best performance is not as good as theirs IMO. Now UT has won two in a row, this game is typically close, and there are quite a few players on our roster that beat UGA the past two seasons. Other than that, UGA has the edge. Either way, I am always pumped for this game favored or not.

I'd think we load the box and try to play 4-3 against them and see if Fromm can go on the road and make the throws.

agree. if he only has to throw it 12 times a game...well, that means they're very efficient in the run game, and the qb can't lose it for them.

keeping them in 2nd and 3rd and long is going to be important. if Fromm beats us with his arm, so be it. i wouldn't be shocked if he did given our coverage abilities...but make the freshman do it.

concerned though it may not matter what we do to try to stop the run game.....

OP...Thanks for the thread...been so tired of seeing all the negative ones here...GBO

JC, we gotta thank GAVol the most. He's doing overtime work to keep this thread about football. I'd ask him how many trash comments he has deleted so far, but I don't think he's had time to count. :)

I think it all boils down to helmet discipline. If he can get a bunch of UGA players to trip/fall on helmets we'll be in pretty good shape.

offensively, i think this may be the best overall defense we've faced. their front 7 is quick and strong. LB's are fast. i'd really like to see us run right at them and try to negate the speed on the edges. 3-4 yards at a time until they have to bring some help up to the middle to stop it.

WR's are going to have to get off the LOS and find spots to convert 1st downs.

i think overall this is a difficult match up for us on both sides of the ball. i'm really concerned about our LB's matching up against that run game, and offensively, i'm not convinced our O line can dictate enough for us to have an effective run game....especially on 1st downs.

cliche to say it...but 1st down offense has to be much better than last week. conversely, we have to find ways to get them off the field when we have the opportunities to do so. can't give them cheap 1st downs.

I don't think it will. At all. We are awful at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Even if we do load the box, run blitz, bring Warrior down a lot for run support, etc., Fromm is more than capable of beating our below-SEC level corners in single coverage. Neyland will be the most hostile environment he's played in so far, but he's already played well in a big road game at Notre Dame. I'll be surprised if he plays rattled.

There is no reason why Georgia shouldn't beat us by a couple TDs other than the tendency of Butch teams to play up or down relative to their level of competition. The most compelling reason the game might be close is because it's been close for several years running despite Georgia coming into the game with the more talented team (except last year; I'd say Tennessee was more talented). That isn't a very compelling argument.

Teams rarely perform the same two weeks in a row. Georgia likely won't play as well as they did last week, we will play better for sure.

I expect a close game.

I agree. This game has been close a lot of times when it really shouldn't have been. Game week feels a lot like 2013 when we held on for dear life against South Alabama and UGA beat LSU. One week later we took a much better UGA team to OT and lost on that screwy Pig Howard fumble.

I'm expecting the defense to be on the field too much. I'm concerned our o line is going to have trouble with the run game against UGA front 7. If that happens I'm not confident in our passing game being successful. I'll be happy if I'm wrong

Dawg fan here. Here is my opinion.
Our strength is our front 7. They are the best in the SEC (Yes, even bama fans agree although they blame it on injuries). They are talented and fast. All will be drafted, and 3 are lock 1st round picks (#78, #7, #3). The secondary is pretty good.
The offense is a work in progress. The O line seems to be playing better, but time will tell. We have a great kicker and a great punter.
On the other hand, I have seen us lay many eggs in the past. IMO, we are 2 TDs better than UT on paper. Unfortunately the game isn't played on paper.
JMO, if both teams bring their A game, UGA will win.

Yea, we didn't show up last week...it happens. Bama had to put their starters back in the game in the 4th Qt last week against Co St because it was back to a one score game. Florida had to play their starters all the way against UMass last year and only had a 6 point lead midway through the fourth quarter. I heard one college coach say that players check out at least one or two games a season - usually against a cream puff but can also happen when their are team chemistry problem. I hope last week was just kids not being engaged in an early kickoff against a nobody...

Our key match ups will be our OL ability to give QD time to throw and our DL ability to be disruptive. Georgia is very fast and will challenge our tackles so it's extremely important for the interior OL to provide a pocket for QD to step up into...if he has to step back like he did most of the Florida game, then Georgia will have sacks and picks galore...

Our DL must get some penetration to disrupt pass and run plays...of course if we have to blitz to get disruption, we'll see how well their QB can make thecquick read...

Like all big games, don't give up big plays, avoid turnovers and shake off Georgia's successes cause they are gonna have some...try to win the game one play at a time...

Agree!

I'd be willing to bet all of VFL-82-JP's money that UT doesn't play as bad as last Sat.

Great thread - Mostly!

If I were coaching, I would try the following:

Defensively: Take away the pass, per earlier poster I think Chaney likes to pass. I would rely on DL to stop run. I would play a little closer on WR's. I would drop the safety's back to take away anything deep and well be safety's in case front doesn't stop Chubb. I would mix in an occasional blitz overload to one area or another just to help passing. I would try to disguise a bit the coverage's and swap up to more man to man with safety deep. I would keep as much speed on the field as possible. Some runs 5-8 yds OK, no long ones and no passes and try to stunt DL into a short one periodically! I think they will get frustrated a bit and try to get balance (force throws). They are a little obsessed about balance.

Offensively: I would try and surprise them and overload blockers to one side and run right at them - especially #3, turn speed into straight power game. Misdirection, folds, pulling blockers was very ineffective for MSU against the speed. Then I would try one really deep down the outside - safe pass but deep, maybe a double pass if Byrd can still throw the ball! Then come back with short passing game 4-6 yard routes flooding underneath. If we can move it just some first downs the game will open up. Have to find one thing or matchup effective and get a few first downs early in the game. Once LB's moving to short passing game open up some draws or screens. Mix it up, but it has to focus on getting them to think and react about one thing (keep the overload going till they react, keep the short passing going till the react) not just random.

Go Vols!

As for the matchup I have no idea what to think. If all of our position groups play up to their potential I think we will hold up fairly well besides at LB. I feel as if the whole game will be decided on how well our front 7 play.

Our offense and Dormady should be alright if playcalling isn't atrocious. Oline and JK will probably start out a little rough but I think it will all come together if we don't abandon the run.. if that happens it's game over. Oline has plenty of potential, this week is the time to show it.
