Tennessee vs. Florida

QB--UF

OL--UF(in a big way)

DE--UT
DT--FL
LB--FL
DB--FL

KR/PR--push
KR/PR Def--UF
P--UT
K--UT

That's the way I see them stacking up. Not as one-sided as you would think. The Palardy/Darr combo are better than Sturgis/Henry no matter how young they are. The only ST advantage you have is in defending kickoffs/punts. I also feel that UT's starting DT's and LB's are not far behind UF's. The key will be depth on the OL and the DT spots and how Simms performs.

UF's receivers were unimpressive last year and they have no proven TE so I have no reason to think they will flip the switch this year, even though Brantley is a better passer. Still, the running threat of Tebow opened up the passing game for him so the upgrade won't be significant.

Getting UF early in the season in Neyland is a huge advantage for us this year and should make for an exciting game. Hopefully, it will be mild weather because UF is better equipped to handle the heat due to depth.

I just hope that the Gators have that usual arrogance and think we are going to roll over for them. They will face a UT team at home that is in tremendous shape and has a huge chip on their shoulder. These things can often overcome superior talent/depth in any given game...

Chaz Henrywas #2 in the ENTIRE COUNTRY in net punting average in 2009. He's one of the best punters in the entire country. 15 of his 34 punts last year went inside the opponents 20. You are an insane homer if you think a true freshman is going to step in and do better than a senior that has started his entire career. There is only one punter in the entire country better than Henry and that's Drew Butler at UGA who won best punter in 2009.

Caleb Sturgis has a full year under his belt. Was a groza semifinalist, and hit 22-30 FG, and hit the longest FG in the SEC last year at 56 yards. He will be a junior, and, having kicked in big moments, including a game winner last year, will MOST LIKELY be better than any kicker UT puts on the field as a freshman.

I sure hope Dooley has more intensity than you guys because if he were to use this soft pansy approach the vols wont be UT Martin! Football is played on the field for a reason not on paper this is why upsets happen...All I know is I'll be in Neyland on Sept 18 cheering the Vols to a victory, how do you expect the team to believe if us as fans don't believe?

Yes sir! And on that day, I'll share my Tennessee whiskey with you, while the band plays the Tennessee waltz........

I question UF's run game. But that's about it. Maybe leadership. And new DC, and relatively new OC. But that's really it. And new QB. But that's seriously all. And maybe their WRs. And I heard Brantley had a sex tape.

UF has a bunch of fast scatbacks, but no true running back. Moody's been a bust---that will be their weakness on the 3rd and short plays.

Wanna name anything else?

What in the world are you talking about? Demps is no scat - dude is fast as hell, but he's a north-south runner with a thick build like that of an every down back. He's a little short but he carries a decent amount of weight.

Moody a bust? Check his numbers buddy, the guy is good, he just can't stay healthy. There are many Gator fans who think he has a chance to explode this year in a tweaked offense. Our only other RBs are Soph Gillislee and TrFr Mack Brown. They're both prototypical RBs as well.

Rainey is now a slot WR, and the only possible other candidate to fit that mold is Debose, and he's no hybrid either - he's a full time WR; might get a sweep every now and again, but he'll never line up in the backfield.

Tennessee has possibly a better D than Florida, but regardless they cannot win this game (or about 4 other conference games) by driving the field or quick striking...DEFENSE MUST carry them if the beat or compete with Florida, Alabama, and LSU

Neither compare to the freak that Palardy is. Period.

this first big game is too much to put on Dooley to win. He is out manned. We should all support the team and cheer like hell and HOPE Brantley gets nervous. But we have way too many holes. Their defense is better than our offense and we are probablly good for 3-4 utrnovers for at least 20 gator points. This Brantley is also s Tall version of Chris Leak. So he will be ready. People forget he was ready to START last year but Tebow came back. They were rated two of the top 3 qb in the sec. WIth that being said I will be there cheering my VOLS but I can't expect Dooley to pull out miracles this year or next in the swamp. Maybe 2012.

You make good since. Our offense is more of the concern. I fear those DEFENSES will eat us up with turnovers.

Florida didn't just lose a quarterback, Tebow was the catalyst of their whole offense. The threat of him running opened up everything for them. And they were automatic on 3rd and 3. Their offense will take a step back this year.

I think so too.

I can't wait to see. I always thought Tebow was worth an extra victory for the Gators (and they never went undefeated). They were automatic on 3rd and 3 for four years.

If he does win like he did with Tebow, Meyer will achieve Legendary status, IMHO.

They also lost Strong and are in year 2 of Mullen's exit. Should be interesting.

...as much as I love my Vols, I think Florida is gunna put a whoopin' on us (if we don't keep it close that is)...The new QB might not be as much as a duel threat what so ever but he is a damn good QB...plus Urban is obviously a good coach...ours is still unproven...

It's interesting how the majority of posts talk about what UF's offense lacks, when UT's offense has even more holes.

The only thing that kept this game close last year was Monty's defensive scheme. This year we will know how much our defensive coaches learned.

We're nowhere near Florida in talent. They should win by 20 or more. Let's compare:

QB
FL: RSJR; #4 rated HS QB in the country; shown nice flashes in brief play to date; no reason to expect anything but excellent play
TN: JC transfer; 3* recruit; burnout at Louisville; up and down play in spring; name the last JC transfer to light up the SEC?

RB
FL: offense needs speed and edge players given their scheme; they have 4 such players in Demps, Rainey, Debose & Dunkley, with Moody (#6HS RB) as their power back
TN: Poole, Oku & Neale do proffer potential

WR
FL: #1 JC WR Carl Moore, 6-3/220, back from injury; #4HS WR Deonte Thompson, who showed flashes last year; & Debose, back from injury last year (a Harvin-type wideout, ranked #2HS WR)
TN: Gerald Jones (top-flight high school recruit & quality WR to date); Denarius Moore (solid 3* WR with deep speed); DaRick Rogers (#4 HS WR)

OT
FL: #1 HS OT Nixon; and 4 choices at the other OT position, all of whom were 5* or 4* recruits out of HS
TN: Thomas may turn out good, but was a mid-tier 3* HS recruit; James should be good, but is a true freshman

OG/C
FL: Their starting lineman not only have experience, but were ranked #3 HS, #2HS and a projected first round prospect
TN: 3 3* OL unless some youngsters step in and step up

We may not be too far behind at the RB/WR positions, and an offensive line can be good without gobs of highly recruited talent, especially at the interior positions. The key will be QB, where there is a massive talent differential in favor of Florida, and the proven talent as well as depth of talent heavily favors Florida.

We are beating Florida by 20.

The only thing that kept this game close last year was Monty's defensive scheme. This year we will know how much our defensive coaches learned.

It was the scheme Chavis used the year before and used again last year at LSU -- take away the big play and force them to move the ball slowly and steadily. That said, both games would have finished with about the same score but the fortuity of a fumble lost (30-13 in 2008, but for Crompton's fumble; 30-13 in 2009, but for Tebow's fumble). We were never really a threat to win either game.

Additionally, with Brantley, their offense may more closely mirror the Utah offense of 2004 than the Tebow offense the last few years, so the scheme may need to change and accommodate accordingly.

He has a title with Chris Leak as his starter and an undefeated season at Utah.
