Need to Know
- Tennessee went 4-0 last week, defeating Morehead State on Tuesday night before sweeping SEC Eastern division rival Kentucky on the road last weekend. The Vols have won five straight following a midweek win over Gardner-Webb on Tuesday night.
- The Vols enter this weekend's series ranked as high as No. 18 in the polls and are No. 6 in the latest RPI.
- In Tuesday's victory over the Runnin' Bulldogs, UT posted its NCAA-leading ninth shutout of the year, two more than any other team. The Big Orange are one shutout away from tying the single-season program record of 10 set back in 1994.
- By sweeping the Wildcats last weekend, the Vols accomplished a handful of feats that haven't been done in quite some time, among them:
- First SEC road series win since taking two of three from Florida in Gainesville back on April 7 and April 8 of 2017.
- First series sweep of Kentucky since 2004 and first series sweep in Lexington since 2001.
- First series sweep against an SEC team on the road since April 7-9, 2010 at Georgia.
- Third series sweep of the season, the most since also sweeping three opponents in 2014. The Vols have swept Appalachian State, Indiana and Kentucky this year.
- With four wins last week, the Vols reached the 30-win mark for the first time since 2014 when the team finished with a 31-24 record.
- The Vols have 30 wins in 41 games was the fastest the program has reached the 30-win plateau since doing it in 39 games back in 2004.
- UT's 16 runs in Friday's series-clinching win over the Wildcats were the most by a Vols' team in SEC play since May 8, 2010 in a 25-5 win at Georgia. Seven different players drove in runs and nine different players had hits for the Vols on the night.
- The Big Orange outscored Kentucky 28-5 for the series while 11 different players drove in runs.
- The Vols' pitching staff has been downright dominant over the past couple of weeks, holding opponents to two or fewer runs in nine of the teams last 11 games. UT has won all nine of those contests.
- Tennessee's pitching staff leads the nation with a 2.68 ERA and ranks second in the country with a 1.06 WHIP. UT also leads the SEC in runs allowed and walks allowed while placing second in opponent batting average.
- UT has won five of its last six SEC games and moved into sole possession of third place in the SEC Eastern division standings with last weekend's series sweep. The Vols' 9-9 SEC record is the best through 18 games since 2008 when the team started 10-8 in conference play.
- Alerick Soularie's two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning lifted the Vols to a 4-2 victory in the series opener against Kentucky. It was Soularie's team-leading 10th long ball of the year, the most by a UT player in a single season since Christin Stewart (now a starter for the Detroit Tigers) had 15 in 2015.
- Soularie also had a two-run double in Saturday's series finale that drove in what turned out to be the game-winning runs. The sophomore ranks among the top five in the SEC in batting average, home runs, slugging percentage and on-base percentage.
- Junior pitcher Garrett Stallings continued his dominance on the mound with another stellar performance in Friday night's 16-1 win at Kentucky, earning his team-leading seventh win of the year (tied for second in the SEC). Stallings also ranks third in the league with a 1.82 ERA.
Arkansas Razorbacks (31-11, 12-6 SEC)
- 2018 Record: 48-21 (18-12 SEC)
- 2018 Postseason: College World Series (National Runner-Up)
- Arkansas was picked to finish third in the Western Division of the SEC Preseason Coaches' Poll and enters this weekend's series leading the division with as 12-6 conference record.
- The Razorbacks are ranked eighth or higher in all six major collegiate baseball polls after sweeping then No. 2 Mississippi State last weekend.
- Arkansas is led by legendary head coach Dave Van Horn, who is in his 17th season at the helm. Van Horn has led the Hogs to 15 postseason appearances, including five trips to Omaha.
- The Razorbacks were one out away from winning their first national championship last season but were defeated by Oregon State in the CWS championship series.
- The Hogs have one of the most dangerous lineups in college baseball that features nine players with 20 or more runs batted in. Arkansas ranks among the top five in the SEC in 13 offensive statistical categories including second in runs scored (328), hits (441), RBI (304), doubles (90), slugging percentage (.488) and on-base percentage (.405).
- Sophomore Matt Goodheart leads the team and ranks second in the SEC with a .385 batting average. He also leads the conference with a .500 on-base percentage.
- Casey Martin leads the league in doubles with 17 while Heston Kjerstad leads the team with 10 home runs.
- RHP Isaiah Campbell has been the ace of the pitching staff. The redshirt junior is 7-1 with a 2.44 ERA on the year and has struck out 78 batters while issuing just 10 walks.
