Tennessee Volunteers vs. San Diego State Aztecs OFFICIAL PREVIEW THREAD

I expect Bruce to play pressure defense and push tempo early. SDSU has lost every game against decent teams where the tempo went over 70 possessions a game. Then I expect Tennessee to settle in and play good defense, forcing them to have to shoot from outside to beat us (something they are not particularly good at). BTW, if the game does end up going down to the wire... SDSU is ranked #338 out of 347 teams in FT%.

FTs have definitely been the achilles (sp?) heel of SDSU this year, but the thing about Fisher's teams is that they only get better as the season goes on, and right now SDSU is playing the best i've seen them all year. During the MWC tourney they were very good from the line and a lot better from the 3 pt range. I am hopefully that they keep this up, but in the past we have failed to show up at big games. This is a very young team (or at least a team that hasn't played together for long) and I'm hoping they give you guys a great game.

actually they have beaten some high paced teams unlv and new mexico.they controlled the tempo and worked the clock and that will be the key is who wins the tempo game

My concern is that UT comes out on fire and plays overly aggressive and gets into foul trouble.

UT does not have a bench made for the NCAA Tourney.

If UT comes out overly aggressive I will not complain one bit. I would rather see that than the nonchalant on-court product we have seen many times before. In fact, I might applaud Scotty Hopson if he gets into foul trouble because that would mean he's either playing defense or trying to get to the rim

Post this on a fresh tread if you like, your site wont let a new member start one up without 20 posts! You think you got snubbed? Aztecs should be an 8. Here is a summary of what you have to tangle with.

Aztecs are very long and athletic - Comparable to Syracuse physically. Very stingy defense and one of the best rebounding teams in the country. Aztecs could beat anyone on any given day, especially if shots are falling. 40 minutes of full court press. Usually play a man defense with much switching due to all players being tall, long and athletic. The Aztecs are a mismatch for small teams

Starters

PG - DJ Gay. Playing pt out of necessity, really a SG. 6-2, court leader, not dynamic but plays under control. Good from 3

SG - Chase Tapley Freshman who is clutch, sweet stroke, makes few turnovers and shoots sparingly. plays great D. Has a broken thumb right now, play time is questionable

F - Billy White - 6'9 post player, can slash and plays lead full court press. long and athletic

F - Kawhi Leonard - 6'8 Freshman of yr in Mtn west. One of the best rebounders in the country. A potential future lottery pick and an absolute beast. 16 pts, 21 rebounds on Sat night. You will have your hands full

C - Malcolm Thomas - 6-9 Shot blocker, slasher, dunker and all around match up problem for a slower C

Bench

C - Brian Carwell - 6'11, 295 lb transfer from Illinois. Space eater, good feet, solid off the bench monster

G - Kelvin Davis - 6'4 3 pt specialist.

F - Tyrone Shelley - scorer but prone to turnovers and defensive lapses.

Thats is short bench.

Overall, you all are going to have your hands full The starting 5 can play with anyone in the country and are used to playing many minutes. One achilles heal is Free throw shooting, one of the worst in the country, but has been better as of late.

Any questions?

A few points:

1 - SDSU is underseeded; 8's about right
2 - Vols are underseeded; 5 is correct.
3 - But so is Georgetown, who should be a 2, etc., etc.
4 - The brackets are biased deliberately. The Committee is NOT trying to pick the best teams. Their objective is to maximize TV revenue. For instance, Duke, which survives by 3-point shooting, is in a bracket surrounded by teams with weak 3-point defense. There's only one reason to do this and, like life, fairness has nothing to do with it. Etc., etc.
... Now that we're past the obvious ...
5 - SDSU built a great rebounding record against teams they outsize significantly. Teams in the tournament are different.
6 - SDSU can play with anyone in the country ... Vols HAVE PLAYED with others and won: Kansas and Kentucky. Gottleib's rot today about the Vols not winning at home ... where's that come from? He must have put in the wrong contacts this morning.
7 - coaching will be important.

Vols by 6.

Vols BIGGEST challenge is to ignore or be shielded from all the anti-Tennessee vitriole on ESPN and the blogs today. Coach Pearl had better sequester the team like a jury is sequestered. What's going on here is a Reggie Miller psych job aimed at our team. All this will make them so mad they won't be able to clear their heads and play.
For this to go on like it is must be orchestrated. It ain't an accident and it has NO PLACE in amateur athletics. Adults and big business - media - are picking on kids, going far further than simply picking winners and losers. Today's rhetoric is akin to that in recent elections. In this case, focused against kids, it's just plain bullying.
Our coaches and the AD need to protect ours from this as best they can.
