its really hard for me because our school doesn't really have a weight room and lacrosse doesn't really use it but my dad died when I was 11 so I don't really have anyone to spot me. I do like 8 reps of 155 because thats all the weights I have in my crappy garage weight bench and thats probably pretty close to my max and i never have a spot because well my mom couldn't even get that off me.
Gotcha. I'd try to get a few small plates (2.5 and 5 pounders) to add to your stack. If you can get 8 reps of 155, try to go 9 next week and 10 the week after. Then, take it up a little (160-165) and do 8 again. You shouldn't tell that much of a difference. If you're using good form, a little help from your mother should be plenty to rep out the last couple of lifts. My wife is very small and still spots me (we won't talk about a couple of very close calls when I was maxing).
Also, be sure to train opposing muscles (back, when dealing with chest) and your supporting muscles, as well (delts and arms). Remember, you are only as strong as your weakest link.
If you have a high metabolic rate like me, you have to eat to make gains. Try to have a good breakfast, eat something with protein content every 4 hours, and be sure to take in a rapidly-available protein source (e.g. whey protein powder) within an hour after lifting.
Hope this helps -- let me know!
