Kentucky all-stars beat Tennessee

BRETT DAWSON
Gannett News Service

LEXINGTON, Ky. — For three quarters, the Tennessee all-stars had run all over their football counterparts from Kentucky.
Then a pair of University of Louisville signees took matters into their own hands.
Future Cardinals Douglas Beaumont and Vic Anderson made explosive runs to spark Kentucky’s offense, and Beaumont’s 23-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winner as Kentucky topped Tennessee 38-24 Friday night at Commonwealth Stadium.
“We were down, and it was just time to show what we could do,” said Beaumont, who had 11 carries for 90 yards and five catches for 83 yards in Kentucky’s win. “We were just fresh coming down the stretch, and we did our thing.”
The future Cardinals’ offensive fireworks helped the Kentucky stars rally from a 21-10 halftime deficit in front of 3,268 fans to win for the fifth time in the series’ past six games.
The comeback came largely on the shoulders — and fleet feet — of tailbacks Beaumont and Anderson, and on the running and passing of Christian County quarterback Keith Tandy, who threw for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Tandy is a dandy
Tandy — who expects to play cornerback at West Virginia — was named Kentucky’s most valuable player, and it was his 23-yard touchdown toss to Beaumont that put Kentucky on top for good.
When Tandy hit Beaumont with 6:25 to play in the game, Kentucky capped its comeback, moving ahead 31-24 after an extra point kick by Casey Tinius of Bowling Green.
Anderson, who ran for
57 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries, put the finishing touch on Kentucky’s win, scoring from 2 yards out with 1:07 to play to set the final margin.
Kentucky’s 449 yards of total offense were a series record.
“Our game plan was to wear them out a little bit,” Kentucky Coach Joey Downs said. “... Those kids came here in great shape, and that made a big difference in the second half.”
Tennessee MVP Dennis Rogan of Knoxville Fulton High School — a UT signee — rushed for 113 yards and a TD in the first half and finished with 174 rushing yards, breaking the all-star game record set by Arliss Beach in 2002.
Run-dominated drives of 80 and 62 yards in the second quarter — the first capped by Rogan’s 1-yard touchdown run, the second on a 1-yard run by Chris Shiverdecker of Alcoa — gave Tennessee a 21-10 halftime lead.
But Tennessee was held to 113 yards of total offense in the second half.
“They came out and played harder in the second half and wanted it more than we did,” Rogan said.
“In the second half, it was a totally different thing. They were calling out every play we ran from the line.”
With Tennessee offense sputtering, Kentucky sizzled.
Beaumont in particular stole the second-half spotlight, the Male star finishing with 70 of his 90 rushing yards after halftime.
“Everybody knows how good Douglas Beaumont is, but (when) you see him in person, it’s unbelievable how good he is,” Downs said. “He makes moves to set up moves. He’s got an unbelievable future.”

Future Cats helped in Kentucky's All-Star win

SEVEN PLAYERS WILL GO TO UK

By Chip Cosby

HERALD-LEADER STAFF WRITER

Seven future University of Kentucky Wildcats participated in the Kentucky All-Stars' 38-24 win over Tennessee on Friday night.

Future offensive linemen Stuart Hines and Phil Hibbard switched over to the defensive side of the ball and played key roles in Kentucky's shutting down of the Tennessee running game in the second half.
Hibbard contributed a tackle for loss and a hurry while Hines, one of the highest rated members of UK's recruiting class, also had a stop behind the line.
Kentucky All-Star Coach Joey Downs said he played Hines and Hibbard on defense out of necessity.
"Stuart was the best offensive lineman we had, but we felt like we needed his quickness up front on defense," he said.

Kicker Ryan Tydlacka also had a nice game. Six of his seven kickoffs were touchbacks, while his only punt went for 46 yards for a fair catch.

"He's the best punter I've ever seen," Downs said.
Offensive linemen Billy Joe Murphy and Brad Durham were a part of an All-Star record 449 yards of total offense.

Kentucky has started to take control of this series in the last few years, which I think is a testament that the Commonwealth is becoming less of a basketball-focused state, opting more for fooball.

Unfortunately, UL is cutting down on UK's take on these kids.

I think it is a testament that the elite Tennessee kids never participate in this game. But yes, yall have control of this one right now.

It said in the KNS today that Rogan may get a look at runningback at UT, but he says himself he expects to start out at corner.

Fulmer might want to give him more than a "look" at tailback. :)

Hey, it's nice to say that we've taken 5 of the last 6 from you guys.

I think Rogan should get at a look at RB before CB imo. He's shown a knack at RB to me - this just prooves it. I think he could be a great back that could split into the slot.

The NFL Network has been televising some of these state vs. state all star games the last few days. I've caught parts of the Louisiana/Texas and Ohio/Pennsylvania games... be cool to see this one pop up on there, considering the hotbed of football talent in Kentucky and Tennessee... :ermm:

Unfortunately, UL is cutting down on UK's take on these kids.

There has been a suprisingly successful grass roots campaign by Minnifield and other former NFL players to improve the level of highschool football in the state. It is amazing what they have done by starting summer camps, introducing a Kentucky football hall of fame, and pushing the state to resume spring football.

They are consistently producing three or four impact players a year now. If UK can hang with the Cards this year, they may see their fortunes turn with some of these recruits.

the two biggest KY stars from the game are both headed to Lousiville. Im suprised, you would think that kids would be drawn to Rich Brooks magnetic personality.

:lolabove: All sarcasm aside, I think that Joker will eventually get his shot with these guys. He is likeable and very charismatic.

soounds kind of like people saying Troop will get his chance eventually, he's likeable and charismatic, of course it wont be UT since he has so hc exp, but somehting like that could easily happen at KY. You know it's got to be killing them, they have a mild upswing in football, they maybe cant see the light, but they know that there is one at the end of the tunnel, and what happens? Lousiville just dominates. gotta be tough.

I think he'd be a dynamic HC at UK. Bleeds blue, and seems to be positioned for Brooks' replacement in a few years when RB retires.

I agree that they have similar traits, but Joker has had some big time exposure, especially considering he coached under Holtz, and the fact that he is already an OC.
