This is an interesting investigation. Obviously, something (or someone) tipped off the NCAA to this. Was it a rival school, or just the fact that it was blatant that girls were holding up visible signs to a school 200 miles away from their homes? Why hasn't anyone thrown USCjr in to the mix of who could have blown a whistle at this? They are in their backyard, they CANT STAND us, and would love any way to get back at us. Either way, we need to break down exactly what could come of this:
-First off, did the girls actually have face-to-face contact with the recruits? By simply going, holding up signs and leaving, I simply cannot see a problem with that. I know that the NCAA is very strict and stingy with certain rules, but come on, there cannot be something wrong with a visual sign such as that. Now that being said, if the girls had immediate contact with them, that could be an issue.
-Who funded the trip? Did the Athletic Department front the bill? That could come in to play, but only if the girls had immediate contact with the recruits. I'm sure there is some sort of expense account for travel, etc... Not sure what the exact specifications are to groups such as this.
-As for Lane, Hammy and Co., there is just no way I can see them OK'ing something like this. I understand the Twitter deal, stupid things happen like that, but girls leaving campus to go 200 miles (on UT's bill, mind you), visiting recruits face-to-face and having immediate contact with them, I just can't see them giving permission to something like that. I also have to believe that with all the recruiting scrutiny that we have already dealt with, there is NO WAY that these groups make trips and such like this without Hamilton having any idea, I don't believe that for a second. I'm sure all groups geared towards this type of thing HAVE to be cleared or OK'd for ANYTHING as big as a deal as it is reporting.
-In turn, this seems to be whistles that were blown from rival coaches or AD's...there is no other reasonable explanation. I don't expect much to come from this at all...there will be no evidence to prove ANYTHING anyways, so it doesn't matter. Now, will it hurt recruiting? Possibly, not really something that will HELP, but Lane knows what the hell to do. As Seinfeld would say, this is Much 'ado about nothin'....
