Tennessee under NCAA investigation over use of recruiting hostesses

The worst part about the motel angle of the story is that, that part could be true. If girls are making a 200 mile road trip to a football game, I would venture to think they aren't making a 200 mile trip back that night.

But even if the motel part of the story holds any weight, Kiffin or the staff wouldn't be so dumb as to leave a paper trail. And neither the commits or girls would admit to that ever happening.

Even as a Gator I'm calling complete BS on this one. The problem will come if UT had knowledege of the "hostesses" actions. Just say the girls were in a school car or UT credit card was used on the trip, etc these actions would be looked at as UT having knowledege of the act. The second problem comes because it happened during those "non periods"(direct contact, vistis, etc). If the rumors about not being able to recruit Joyner because of Lane just saying the kids name on TV are correct, this could become ugly. Someone snitched big time. I blame the Canes on this one. Between Bryce Brown and getting better kids out of Dade this year. Even Meyer wouldn't call the NCAA on Lane. No one in the SEC would put more "eyes" on the conference after Bama.

Well, Gran would know the ins-and-outs of UT's recruiting. IF he has no loyalty to Kiffin and/or UT... what would hold him back? He is at FSU and FSU was targeting the Byrnes Trio pretty hard. Keep in mind we are dipping into FSU's talent pool also.

Pure speculation, however.

what would happen if the coaching staff knew these girls were making the trip, but never encouraged them or paid them to do it?

The Gran theory may actually make sense. FSU was recruiting Miller and Willis pretty hard, and Willis was committed to them before us.

I didn't say that no one else does it. All I'm doing is quoting Lattimore, and he said that he's never seen it. Given the fact that he is the #1 player in the state, the #7 player in the country, and already has 12 offers from major college programs...hardly just any recruit...I'd say he has a pretty good amount of experience with college recruiters to speak from...maybe even more than you. The original post implied that this is almost common practice. The FAIL is on you.

no my friend. one recruit does not change the fact that other schools employ such tactics. you getting all butt hurt about it is pretty funny.

Have you ever heard the term "lack of institutional control"?

of course.

but, i seriously doubt it's considered lack of institutional control of the coaching staff knew these girls were going to see some kids play football on their own dime, especially assuming these girls weren't on their way to flat out commit a recruiting violation.

if the staff knew the girls were going to SC specifically to break a rule, then yes, i would agree, otherwise, i dont.

I don't know why there is an assumption that an SEC coach or the NCAA leaked to the NYT. Look at how many players...in three states...have already been interviewed. That means that their parents know, there coaches know, their ADs know, their classmates know. There may have already been 1,000 people outside the state of Tennessee who knew about this before the story broke. It could have very easily been leaked to the NYT by a high school FB coach or AD. And remember that Pahokee was one of the places where NCAA investigators went. Maybe everyone in Pahokee hasn't forgiven Kiffin and UT after all.

Oh this is too much:eek:lol::eek:lol:

Especially if the "Kiffin and Gran not getting along well behind closed doors" rumors have legs.

Not really.

Gran has been gone less than a week? This reads to be going on a bit longer than that.

Plus, remember how Pearl was "blackballed" for the Illinois bit back in the day....imagine the blackball on Gran's name if he actually did that.

Seriously doubt it.

The Cane claim is speculation on my part because UM always wants their history to go away when it comes to crap like this. Canes aren't happy about BB and UT making a push in their back yard. Just speculation and rumors but I'm sticking with the U on this one.

I like how g8terh8ter_eric pretty much got bashed yet every time this comes on ESPN the first thing mentioned is the forums.

Let's remember the allegations and the scope of the investigation. The investigation extends all the way to Pahokee and Miami. If these girls were members of UT's official hostess organization, it isn't likely that they went on their own dime.

Institutional control comes into play because this would involve lack of control or oversight by the university. There do not have to necessarily be any specific violations by the football coaching staff. If the suspicions raised by the article are true, and if university funds were expended, then it was organized and administered by an official university body that assists in the recruitment of football players. The hostess group no doubt has a faculty sponsor. If travel expenses were paid, someone had to authorize those expenses. Not only is the faculty sponsor accountable, the person they report to, all is also accountable as far as the NCAA is concerned. Since it involves the recruitment of athletes, the AD is certainly accountable, and maybe even more than Kiffin.

I wouldn't travel 200 miles to see my HS alma mater play football. I don't understand why so many people seem to think that it's not unusual for college girls to drive 200 miles, at their own expense, to see a high school football game involving high schools that they did not attend. For those of you who think this isn't unusual, have you or any of your buddies ever done that?

You don't even know man, you don't even know. Ever since Pearl was hired, my friends have blatantly scolded me, and my love for UT basketball. They still curse his name, even though half of them weren't born when it happened. I have received more crap than anyone deserves, I can't even image what would happen to Pearl if UT ever scheduled a home and home with Illinois.... At least I could watch the team in action for once!

Yes, because them merely mentioning message boards on ESPN just proves that's why the NCAA started the investigation.

i agree with that post.

what i was saying was, if the coaches knew the girls were going, and nobody from UT was paying their way and/or there was no anticipation of a recruiting violation being made, then i doubt that would constitute 'lack of institutional control'.

the scenario you just described would without a doubt bring some consequences.

No but my highschool isn't #2 in the country. There are people in the state of Tennessee that travel to Nashville to watch Ensworth and other teams that are ranked in the national top 50 and in most cases they are traveling 200 miles or more. No I wouldn't do it but there are people who will.
