Tennessee Traditions

I'm a huge fan of the Scouts.

Me too. My high school hosted (and still does) a DCI show every year and when Madison came they always stayed at our HS. So, we always got to see them practice before the show.

If growing up in Lenoir City in the late fifties early sixties "city," then I guess I grew up in the city. Ran the ridges from Kingsport to Chattanooga growing up. My family were country people, but they weren't hillbillies. They all had sense enough to know the term is an insult.

Only to stuck-up people who care more about what people think than about their heritage.

First off, let me say that I know ALL of our traditions are sacred and Jesus wears orange..... BUT, if you could change one--or create a new one, what would it be?

More full time Vols fans, part time a$$holes- less full time a$$holes, part time Vols fans on VN and all over the internet. That would start a great tradition.

Have you ever lived in a northern state and been called a hillbilly because you were from Tennessee? I have, and it was most definately intended as an insult. Got back at the guy though. He was the mayor of a small city in 1991 and a big Notre Dame fan, going to all their games. I bet him UT would beat them at South Bend. If Notre Dame won, I would have to sing the Notre Dame fight song in front of a public City Council meeting. If UT won, he had to sing Rocky Top in the same forum. To his credit he sang every verse, but was very red faced as he sang. I still have it on tape. Don't lecture me about defending my heritage or my beloved Volunteers.

Good story my friend. I've too been called a hillbilly by a northerner and a Floridian lol

My freshman year in the Pride, when we marched into BDS, the left side of the crowd yelled at us for being yankees, while the right side berated us for being hillbillies. It was odd.

I have been called a hillbilly by northerners and northwesterners(i.e. the people hillbillies call Yankees) more than once and even though it was intended as an insult, it doesn't bother me in the least because I am proud of where I am from and in my experience in life, it just shows their ignorance. There are people in this country that still believe we go barefooted and eat possum every other meal. That just tells me how educated they are, so call me hillbilly anytime. I will just smile knowing I live in the greatest and most beautiful place this great country has to offer and the more people that don't want to be here is better for me and my family. BTW, I am educated and don't use the normal slang of the area I live in(I do have the accent) and don't fit the general description of a hillbilly, but people are gonna do what they are gonna do and say what they are gonna say. I didn't mean to insult you or your family, though. Sorry if I did.

Thanks. Got the idea from Reggie White who lost the same bet with one of his pro team mates (I forget which one) the year before. Somehow I just knew UT would beat them that year.

Amen amen!! I use the sayings like, "I'm hotter than a Billy goat in a pepper patch" & "that girl is meaner than a bag of rattlesnakes" that's what make our part of the country unique lol

Have Stone Cold Steve Austin lead the pre game cheer and Spartacus lead us through the T! That would be my new tradition! GBO!

I would make it a tradition for the fans to stand and cheer for our D whenever there is 3rd or 4th down. I know, I said STAND...it's a crazy concept around Neyland except for the student section.

There shouldn't be a need for a tradition to be cheering for your team. But, I see what you're saying....

My three traditions to add:

1) Black jerseys every halloween weekend. I know Kiffin techincally started it, but still, a cool idea.

2) Move back Alabama to the third saturday in October. That's what it is called, that is what day it should be played.

3) Florida-Tennessee played at 8:00 every year. There is nothing better than a night game against UF at Neyland and vice versa.

Id like to see more youthful excitement at Neyland. Now let me explain first. I know there's the whole spelling of Vols and singing Rocky Top (with the woo) but I went to the Tenn-S. Carolina game. Before every kick off they played that zombie nation song and every south carolina fan under the age of 40 were jumping around, swinging a towel and acting crazy. Now sure that's not exactly going to change the outcome of a game but as a recruit Id love to see fans going crazy. Ive been to numerous games Neyland and its just pom poms and clapping. Its one thing that's always turned me off on games at Neyland and the reason I usually go on the road to watch Tenn.

I live for The Vols. I don't want to change traditions. But I think we need to do some modern twists. A blackout once a year would be fun. And I think we need to get the stands pumped up... loud... everyone bouncing up and down. I think we should play the Zombie Nation song too. We need to become a loud powerhouse. I hate to say it, but something like how crazy LSU's stadium gets.
