Tennessee to host JV game vs Hargrave

it will most likely be mostly walkons because if we play anyone that we would be redshirting they would lose that year, so it'll be guys who play special teams and walkons or freshman that already redshirted in the game.

Would playing in a JV game affect redshirt status?

The contest will not be limited to freshmen or sophomores, but anyone who competes would thus forgo the right to redshirt.

Thats what the article says, but Hat probably knows more than the writer.

Well, if Hat is wrong then I'm wrong too. I could have sworn that JV games didn't count toward redshirts.

...and right or wrong, I give Hat the benefit of the doubt over a sportswriter.

That's what I was thinking. I thought I remembered back in the day when everybody had JV teams that the redshirt guys played all the time.
Correct. Absent some change in 'AA legislation that I'm unaware of, JV games have no effect on one's redshirt status.

Looks like we might be wrong on this. I've seen several references to redshirts not being able to play in JV games. I'm about 99% sure that it didn't used to be that way, but it could be one of several reasons why JV teams have become so rare in the past 20 years or so.

That would make sense. The value of these games is about nil if you can't play freshmen.

I think the 85 scholarship rule also contributed to the demise of JV. It's not like the good ole days when there were 100+ on scholarship.

Yeah I am sure that hat knows more than athletic director Mike Hamilton about the rules.
