Tennessee to hire Justin Wilcox (merged)

I'm about 75% sold on the hire.
I'm down with it. His hire is on par, if not better than the prospect of Bumpas from TCU. Travis Jones, the DL coach with the Saints was my favorite, but this guy has a proven track record from a team that year in, year out just gets it done...with less talent. He also has plenty of experience dealing with the spread option. Now, if we can get Chuck Smith as the DL coach...we're set.
I was highly upset when CDD hired Hinshaw, as it made me feel like that was the direction he was going to take with the rest of the staff. To Coach Dooley's credit, he has instead made some impressive moves with the OL, S&C, and now DC hires.

Keeping Chaney and Thompson was huge, and I think Thompson should be named RC for all he has done these past few weeks...and with that, a nice little raise.

If its him, I'm glad he has experience as a DC.

The scheme needs to work, but looking at a team on film and developing a plan on how to stop it is important also.

He has developed very successful game plans. A DLine coach from the NFL might not have this experience. I think I'll trust CDD on this one. This hire is his most important.

Has anyone mentioned the fact that this is the guy that held big bad ducks in check at the begining of the season

If this guy is hired, it's sink or swim in the SEC.

He could be a huge hit, but could be a huge blow. Time will only tell.

I'm around 70% sold on this hire. :ermm:

^This^ :good!:

I've spent the last couple hours going over Boise State film. They have some pretty bad tackling going on. It's kinda a funny sad since even the ESPN commentators say, good thing BOISE has a potent offense because these BOISE state coaches really need to start working on fundamentals with these kids. The best line was. "I think coach Petereson needs to tell these boys to tackle with their hands and not their heads"

I will say that i am happier about this than the Hiestand hire. I have a feeling though we won't be able to make holes for our runners on the O line but will have huge holes for our opponents on our D line. I think we will get a few sacks and pick up a few more picks over last year.

Then maybe you should have sent in your resume.

Yeah... Me too. I'm going to trust that CDD knows what he's doing here but a guy that ran a WAC defense isn't exactly what I was hoping for.... The WAC isn't exactly reknown for sterling defensive play..... I sure hope it works out if it is in fact a done deal.... One thing I will say is that the BSU fans are sure sorry to see him go.... That's encouraging, in a weird sort of way.....

The WAC IS known for great offenses so placing so highly NATIONALLY on defense against some of the best offenses in the nation is no small feat.

Team - National Offensive rank

Nevada - 2
TCU - 7 (Bowl Game)
Idaho - 9
Utah St. - 12
Hawaii - 14
Fresno St. - 17
Oregon - 33

Playing those teams he still managed to field the 14th best defense in the nation with what I imagine is a bunch of 2 and 3 star players. I am 100% behind this hire!

Whats your deal with Hiestand? He was a great OL coach at UI and did a pretty good job with the Bears. THe Bears did not have any talent this year on the O-line. I think he was a great hire, read his bio, especially the part about every starting O-Lineman at UI signed an NFL contract. That is impressive.

I know GoVolsXtra will be the last people to confirm this story, but I'm not sure this is a done deal yet. Remember all the "It's confirmed" stories already turned belly up this offseason? [Steele, Cutcliffe, Bissacia, Smith]

Nothing from any Tennessee People yet either....

The problem with the oregon win was that LaMichael James only had like 4 or 5 rushes that game. He tore up the conference the rest of the year with i believe over 100 yards each game or something crazy like that. However, once he went against a Big 10 D he was pretty ineffective. West Coast D is just not as strong or smart as SEC or BIG 10 D. I just don't understand why we couldn't hire a BIG 10 or SEC coach or someone that understands how to really stop the running game.

I know Heistand well i have family in CHI-TOWN i get care packages and DVDs of all the games, plus awesome brats. Chicago had awesome talent on the O-line they have had like a perfect unchanged O line for the past 3 years!!! Forte should have had an awesome year he didn't. Hiestand can't even teach a 30 year old man to block!!!

Well then I guess its a good thing that he is going to coach 18-22 year old kids. Read this quote and tell me how you are not impressed, "During his Illinois days, Hiestand coached 12 All-Big Ten Conference selections on the offensive line. Every starting offensive lineman in Hiestand's first seven years with the Illini signed an NFL contract." How can you not be impressed with that?

Its curious that in the Barry article it says Dooley wanted to continue last year's defense.

This seems like a completely different direction.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

according to television station wboi2, broncos coordinator justin wilcox, 33, interviewed with the vols and had “a done deal” to take over the defense for coach derek dooley.

kns

A 4-3 with multiple sets and a lot of 4-2-5 sets as well.

Why would any DC run that ? The whole goal is to have a multiple defense without changing personel ...gets the offense in the wrong play . You want the defense reacting to the offense , not the offense reacting to the defensive personel groups .

I like this hire, that is if it's true. Time will tell, but I like that he has dealt with the spread quite a bit and his numbers are solid against some pretty good teams. While the WAC is not the SEC (obviously) he is basically playing with the same caliber of players as his competition.

He runs a 4-3 but not your ordinary 4-3 by any means. It has a lot of sets with it. I've also heard that he runs a 4-2-5 as well and when I watched the 2010 Fiesta Bowl it clearly shows both. From what I saw his defense is based on a lot of pressure by the DL with a blitz thrown in there and he's not afraid to do it from any position I saw LB, S, and DE, while the LB's and Sec, a ton of bodies, are there just waiting allowing for a lot of bodies to be around the ball.

Great hire. Boise State is probably my 2nd favorite team in the country. This bunch does more with less, every year, and the coaching staff doesn't ever complain about the BCS. At least not on camera. They're a classy bunch out there, and appear to be very disciplined on both sides of the ball.
