I have no idea why someone laughed about this guy as DC. He is not southern, but we do not need everyone on our staff to be Southern. He is also not a mormon I do not think. Dooley had to go against him and knows how good he is. Wilcox also beat Oregon this year and Oregon returns many of the players who he beat. While we should not hire a coordinator based on one game, it is a measure of his skill that he has won so often with who he has on the roster, and it could help the way we start next year and his credibility with our team that he beat Oregon.

Here is a quote from a recent article:

Defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox, architect of the creative schemes that took down Oregon and TCU (among others) this season, is staying at Boise State. Wilcox was a finalist for the D-coordinator’s post at Texas A&M. Reports out of Texas say Air Force defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter will likely get the job.

Here is more about him:
Wilcox Bio - Broncosports.com - The Official Athletics Website Of Boise State University

Justin Wilcox, 32, is in his fourth season as defensive coordinator at Boise State and his sixth season overall after working as a graduate assistant for the Broncos from 2001-2002.

During the first three seasons with Wilcox in charge of the defense, Boise State led the Western Athletic Conference in total defense and scoring defense each year. Last season the Broncos led the WAC in total defense (308.2 yards per game), pass efficiency defense (94.4 rating) and scoring defense (12.6 points per game). Nationally, the Broncos finished 2008 ranked No. 2 in pass defense, No. 3 in scoring defense and No. 20 in total defense.

Before assuming the duties as the Bronco defensive coordinator, Wilcox spent three seasons at California as linebackers coach. While coaching at Cal from 2003-2005, Wilcox helped the Golden Bears to three straight bowl games and 26-12 record. The Bears played in the Insight Bowl in 2003, the Holiday Bowl in 2004, and the Las Vegas Bowl in 2005. Wilcox was credited with turning his linebackers into a unit that epitomized the Cal defense’s swarm-to-the-ball philosophy. In 2005 he coached a second-team All-Pac-10 player and two first-team freshman All-America picks.

Wilcox played at Oregon from 1995-99 and was a part of four Duck teams that advanced to bowl games. He played in the 1997 Las Vegas Bowl, the 1998 Aloha Bowl, and the 1999 Sun Bowl. He redshirted in 1995 when Oregon participated in the Cotton Bowl.

Wilcox is not leaving this close to signing day. He already turned down an offer to be Texas A & M'S DC.

Today, 01:15 PM - TOP

What about Boise State's defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox? He has been the defensive coordinator for 4 years finishing first in total defense and scoring defense every year. In the WAC of course. He did hold Oregon to 8 and TCU to 10 this season. The guy is only 32. Maybe he isn't the most qualified but he could be a nice snag for an up and coming defensive coordinator. Being young enough to relate to the players wouldn't be a bad thing.

They have like 21 of 22 starters back...a big game with Va Tech...and a GREAT shot at a BCS game...and if they run the table...possibly a BCS title shot. I wouldn't leave if I were him either.

TOP yeah I think it was you I was referencing who likes him, and someone else who shot it down. I thought they must know something I did not, so I looked into it more.

I love the idea.

We could get him for 500k, and he would be an awesome DC!

He has beaten Oklahoma in a BCS game, he beat TCU and Oregon this year...he is a stud.

He'd get paid a lot more money and it would add to his resume. He will most likely have to take a head coaching job at a smaller school when his time comes. If he does a good job at Tennessee, he would fast track that a little bit. Muschamp will be Texas's headcoach. Strong is now Louisville's head coach. Jimbo, FSU. Joker, Kentucky. Etc. I would rather go directly to one of those schools than have to make a stop at some small place like Akron. I would be amazed if he even gets offered a HC job at all being a DC in the WAC. He will have to take a job in a better conference at some point if he wants to move up the ladder.

Man, I would be all for it. Two things...is he mormon, if so he might like it out there more than he would down in the bible belt. I wouldn't care, but I have heard that said about Petersen as well. Second, he isn't going anywhere. Right now why would you leave Boise State to come to Tennessee for a lateral move? More money, yes, but you have to weigh more money against coaching a potential Top 5 team.

I wouldn't be against it. Wouldn't normally be my first choice but Tennessee wasn't put in a very good situation. They rolled the dice on Dooley. This would be the time to let it ride. He has done a good job and at 32, could be something special.

Chris Petersen is a scientologist I believe.

WAC to SEC isn't a lateral move.

I've read a lot of good things about Tim Deruyter mentioned in the post above.

Why does it matter if he's southern or a Mormon?? How does either of those things affect his coaching ability??? Ignorance, and Intolerance in this day and age should be a crime!!

SO you wouldn't want to hire a Joe Paterno (in his Prime), Pete Carroll, or a John Gruden to be your coach?? Definitely not Southern!!

How 'bout a few Mormons I just bet you wouldn't have a problem with either....Andy Reid (HC - Philadelphia Eagles), Norm Chow (OC-UCLA), Mike Leach (former HC -TX Tech)

Thats just to name a few....please stop the ignorant talk!!

He is from Oregon, not Idaho or Utah and although Oregon has its fair share of Mormons there is no gap for him on his resume that would indicate taking a mission.

Yeesh. I do not know why I keep going over this.

I like some geographic diversity, but you want a coach who does not fit in so poorly culturally that he hates Knoxville and wants to leave. We just had that with Lane Kiffin (and especially his wife).

As far as Mormons, it is not the magic underwear that bothers me, it is that as a fan I want guys who do not have the baggage of being a part of a religion that is historically antagonist to African Americans.
