It worked out OK...but. Why do you bring in the pitcher in relief who has struggled the most, hasn't pitched in 12 days and rarely pitches in relief? When you have Moss who has pitched better, pitched more and is used to coming in with runners on base? 66% of her appearances this year have been in relief. Arnold had pitched 1 time in relief this year. I realize we have to work Arnold back into the rotation if she's feeling better but it's best to let her start an inning fresh with no runners and not so much pressure. Just my opinion.

Totally agree.

Arnold really has had her confidence shaken. Today couldn't have helped. Close game, but Rogers is really solid for a FR and Moss gets it done. Need 3 pitchers, though. Wonder if they'll try to get Arnold back in the groove tomorrow or stay with MM?

It was a great day for a softball game in a wonderful facility. I was impressed with the condition of the field. The grass was manicured. Just saying....

Just got to watch that was a little too close for comfort. Good job Matty closing it out. Arnolds biggest problem is when she misses she splits the middle of the plate. I would have let Rogers try to work through the 6th a little more. Hitting began to get going started figured out their starter. Good win in the end Arkansas is known as a hitting team

Will someone fill me in on Ally Shipman's injuries, please? I have watched a few games and have not yet heard what really happened and her list of injuries. I learned she is out for the season. Is she eligible for a medical redshirt? Thanks VolNation!!! 😎🐎

We still are in the dark about the exact details of the collision at first with the Mtsu 1b. The results are a cast from her hand to above her elbow a cast and or heavy wrapped leg from ankle to hip with a heavy brace ( this was what saw last weekend). She sadly beyond the redshirt window either arm or leg would have probably finished her season. The hit was either vicious or awkward (nothing intentional) and maybe both just really bad luck for her and team.

Yes I have asked the same thing but I guess not any VN fans there since no one tried to give us the way it went down. She was in the dugout today dressed and looking good as always but all I could see was a crutch.

Brian Rice posted this on another site (I've tried to get him to come and post here since some of you listen to the games, but he has some sort of deal with the 247 site):

"Shipman was at bat and hit a slow roller up the first base line that looked like it might turn foul. Once the first baseman (who was the same height but had about 40 lbs on Ally) realized that she wouldn't have a play on the ball, she tried to draw an obstruction call and took Ally out. It was a huge hit that she could barely brace for."

and after a follow-up question:

"She was right on the line, it was not far enough up the line for the outside lane to have begun. The fielder has a right to attempt a play on the ball, even in the baseline.
The call that was made was fielder’s interference, a hit. This was the call because the first baseman had stopped attempting to field the ball and raised up for the impact. Had the she continued to attempt to field the ball, Shipman would have been out for runner’s interference (and the collision would have been much less damaging). There was a long argument over the call with the MTSU coach and the umpires, him feeling strongly that Shipman should have been out for interference."

I know I and all others wanting to know really appreciate you giving us what Brian had said!!

Thank you for that explanation. Was just wondering, since what that player did was obviously dangerous to our player, will that player face any consequences for her actions?

I thought we would have to out score Arkansas in this series meaning no pitching duels and yesterday we did. We didn't hit their pitching like I had hoped but got some key hits with runners in scoring position to score runs. Arkansas can score runs they average 8 runs per game coming in and are hitting .320 as a team. I thought this was a series we would dominate their right handed pitching and maybe even put up double digit runs. I look for Matty to start today and back to Rogers tomorrow.

My thinking as well...

I think that the reasoning was that Tennessee didn't want Arkansas to have any pitches from Matty to review or help with their gameplan today which I am certain will be Matty starting. With the lead we had and Arnold's ability to go through lineups once without much problem usually I am sure the thought was she could close out two innings with a lead. She hasn't had any kind of control this season. She has been behind batters from the beginning and has not been able to use the corners of the plate. All her pitches that are strikes are around the middle of the plate belt high. I don't have any problem with Ralph trying to use her to close with the lead we had. Putting her in a spot to succeed and her making it happen would've been huge. To bad she didn't get it done and is now certainly back to determining how to turn her season around.
I hope the next time we play a mid-week game Ralph will give her the start and let her try to get back in a groove.

The reason she did not get a start may have not being cleared by the medical staff as well as it was colder than a witches t**. The visit to the ER as well. You are right I think she needs a mid week game to get in a groove. I look for her to get there at some point. I know that they wanted to save Matty but we had to get this win and worry later about who pitches. Arky are big strong right handed hitters who get their swings in. We have gone so many years with just two throwers it seems like we are down again. Key game today!!! JMHO as always!

Agreed, but unfortunately with the back to back Saturday-Monday series the next two weeks, UT doesn't have room for a midweek until April 16th when they're supposed to make up the ETSU game.
