Tennessee Softball 2023

KiKi and Ashley named NFCA First Team All-Americans. Boo named second team.

Interestingly enough the NFOY, Stanford’s Nijaree Canady, didn’t make an AA team, presumably because she only pitched 30% of her team’s innings. She leads the nation in ERA and Ks/7 innings.

Just turned 6 starting them early or is that too early

My 7 year old has the basic pitching mechanics down but all you can hope for really is some kind of ball control. Movement isn't happening. Almost everything around here is coach-pitch ball, on her rec-league team and travel team. Don't worry about pitching yet, but if she can practice the motion (SLOWLY and accurately) it can help to build muscle memory.

Go watch some games when the girls first start pitching. You will see many more wild pitches than any kind of deliberant ball movement.

Learning early the power of the large leg muscles. If you watch the college players, they have serious thighs and use those to generate great power both hitting and pitching.

Lot of youtube videos out there that will teach how to hold it. Got to be willing to experiment on what grip works for her.

But, that young...just learning what sona said. Slow and accurate. Build off that. Keep it fun. Minimal travel ball until she sees if she really likes the sport.

Like previous posters have stated...most of the power comes from the hips and the drive forward of the mound. The farther you drive forward the closer you are when you release the ball, which means less time for the batter to pick up the ball rotation.

Speaking of ball rotation, my daughters pitching coach had her every night pitch the ball into the living room couch. She did 50 of each of her pitches, screw (her go to), drop curve, off speed and fastball. She was only 2 ft from the couch and the purpose of the drill was working on the correct spin on the ball. It was only at 1/3 speed. Good luck to your daughter and hope to see her in a Vols uniform in the future.

You have it right. No 7 year old is going to throw the ball even remotely hard enough to make it move. At that age, focus on good mechanics, throwing the ball aggressively and working on control.
