Tennessee Ranked Number 8 In This Week's Associated Press Poll

Can someone educate me on college basketball rankings? I find I don’t really understand how they are ranked the way they are. Like watching #6 Kansas losing by 20 against unranked Texas tech and their records differ by a game and a half. Now granted O don’t know their SOS, or adjusted efficiency ratings, which are the only metrics I’m really aware of, but just trying to figure out what factors most into a teams ranking as I can’t seem to understand college basketball vs college football seems more straightforward (with a smaller sample size).

I'm not sure we are that good. ATM literally looked bigger, faster, stronger and better. I know it's one game, but we got an arsky whippin.
This is college basketball now. Three point shot, transfer portal, NIL, home officiating. Everybody is going to lose a bunch, probably when you least expect it. Heck, FAU, Miami and San Diego State were in the Final Four last year. That’s all the proof you need.

The way this team can play at times will be critical come tournament time. IF the team that showed up for the A&M game shows up for the first game of the tournament, then they might be on the plane home the next day. With all the talent, something tells me (at least it's a bad feeling that I hope does not happen) that we will see another disappointing tournament run.

How so? This was the first double digit loss of the season and the other two losses within conference were by a combined 9 point margin.
My bad, just seems like South Carolina embarrassed them. Feels like a bigger margin of loss.
I mean they had 26 at the break,59 total points.

8 is very generous. I agree with others saying this team just isn’t great. SC is far and away the best team in the league. Afraid we have a few more butt kickings left to endure in the regular season.

This team can play lights out, then choke. They are not made for tournament basketball. As others have noted, they don’t do well against big front lines. Hard to see them going deep into any tournament, SEC or the N.C.A.A.

So many bad takes in this thread and so little time, if anybody needed to pump up their ignore numbers these two would be the perfect candidates 😂

Because your takes are so obviously superior. But I won't ignore you, that's cowardly.
It’s so obvious you are a casual fan, nationally we are top 10 for a reason we have played some of the best teams and won and lost our fair share.

To act as if SC is superior to us because they beat us in one game is such a bad take like there is no getting around that…start actually using resources like Kenpom where they look at metrics such as strength of schedule or offensive and defensive efficiency etc.

There is no point in arguing with you because it’s obvious you have very little basketball knowledge. Basketball is a marathon not a sprint if you can understand this then there is still hope for you.

Well, I’ve been a proud casual fan since the Don Devoe era and have never wavered even during some truly bad years. So I love the fact that we can argue the worthiness of the Vols as a top 10 team. We’ll get our chance against SC to prove the metrics are right or wrong.

You do realize a lot of these highly ranked teams have lost on the road as well right?
I do realize that. Kansas got annihilated.
Does that mean because of name recognition a team should be ranked in the top ten?
That's part of the problem with rankings.
Dukes, UNC, Kansas, etc start the season in the top ten every year. Unless they totally implode they'll end up with a 4 seed or higher every season. Advantage blue bloods.

The problem is you don’t need a metric to look up SC’s schedule to see they didn’t play the same strength of schedule as us…it’s just being willfully ignorant at this point to not do a google search.
