Tennessee Ranked 17th in AP after week 1

I'm surprised we are ranked. Missed extra point, missed fg, fumble, one play away from attempt winning fg, another fumble. So lucky. The money our coaches make plus facilities and talent no excuse. I have been a big CBJ supporter from day one, he has done so much for a program in the dumps. I lost a lot of respect for him when asked his thoughts on Hurd TD fumble recovery. Stated shows our resiliency. What crap he should of said we were out coached, our played and the better team lost tonight. GBO I'm still a sucker and think we only lose 2

These guys were hanging 40 on the board though. Had UT and App State been a shootout we don't fall at all. We did not show up offensively and I think that is the reason we are being called out.

Mich St didn't hang 40.

Wonder what the hell that list was I was looking at?! Coulda swore it said FPI but obviously not. Oh well thought it was crap anyway with Fla up there. No idea what it was now tho

I must have been looking at the same thing you did. Either way, I think this is good for the team. They need to wake up and realize that no one's going to hand them a single win. We have to scratch and claw and fight for every single game, cause any team in the nation can show up and beat the team that doesn't. We just saw this first hand and didn't deserve to win that game. Our boys are gonna have to grow up in a hurry and get their heads on straight.

I'll hope Butch is tearing some heads off in practice this week.

True. I thought the PWilly catch was a TD. But we didn't play like a Top 10 team; we were favored by 22 points and barely won by 6 in OT. Bad losses like that generally cause a team to drop further than others. It really doesn't matter. Put up a lot of points against VT and get a statement win, and we'll probably move back up to 12-15.

There was a similar play in the game last night. FSU receiver in the end zone. Dives forward to catch a low ball. Firmly catches it with his hands then his feet and knees hit the ground. Then his stomach and chest hit, knocking the ball loose. The officials call it an incomplete pass. Possession must be maintained when going to the ground.

It kind of balances out how WRs are now defenseless players when they jump for a ball. Can't blow the receiver up when he does that so you take him to the ground and fight to knock the ball loose. I'm not saying these are good rule changes, but they are part of the game for now

Michigan St. almost lost to a bad 1AA team, Furman and stays the same rank. Go Figure. UT basically got more penalized for struggling on prime time with more people watching.

They didn't almost lose. They were never in any danger of losing. They played poorly, but again with as much success as they've had the past few seasons, they're going to get the benefit of the doubt.

THIS....right HERE. Texas, Georgia, FSU, etc all have freshmen qbs that are given the freedom to RUN their offense and throw the ball. Meanwhile our old school OC keeps a choke hold on our QB and runs an antiquated offense. Will it work to beat teams like Vandy, Mizzou, SC and Kensucky? Sure it will....but to be elite...you have to allow your QB the freedom to actually play with freedom. Until that happens we are where we deserve to be.

rewatch the O highlights that Freak posted....it may change your perspective.

QB has to be able to consistently make a vertical pass to be given that freedom.

Same ole "OL is trash" schtick is getting old. They should have been better, mainly with run blocking. There were a couple plays where ASU got to him; however, with the exception of intended short passes...the majority of the time Dobbs had 4-5 secs to throw.

Overthrows, under-throws, shoe string throws, behind the rec throws....not an overall impressive effort by a senior QB. Maybe a dedicated QB coach could improve his technique.

Legs are his weapon....not arm. But, since I don't know as much as the majority here...it's all because of scheme, CBJ and CMB.

If the Vols pull out a squeaker against VT, will they drop 8 more spots to #25?

If they don't play much better than they did against Appalachian State, it could conceivably happen, no?

Only Petersen's third year. You think their good this year, wait until next season. They only have 8 seniors in their two deep.

True, his third season but months away from his fourth yr (signed with UW Dec 2013) I could have worded it better

The answer is:

PLAY BETTER !

Take those thoughts outta their heads....

PLAY LIKE MEN, LIKE YOU HAVE SOME BALLS !

Don't give them an option. Grow a set, *****-slap your opponent and we won't have to debate why we got dropped in polls for barely beating a team we were supposed to beat by 3 touchdowns... AT HOME.

Florida dropped out of the Top 25 after winning last week.

We did win & played a better team than UF. Like I said, if this was a school like UF or Bama, or Notre Dame & they won like this they would have either stayed the same ranking or fell no more than one spot. Thanks!

I don't think Tennessee earned a #9 Preseason ranking

I agree...
How can any one think that we should be ranked in the top 25 when we haven't been able to beat Florida and Georgia in the same season. We are middle of the pack until we can win the SEC East.

"19. Tennessee Volunteers (1-0)

Trending:

Preseason ranking: 9
Week 1 result: Defeated Appalachian State 20-13

Was the sweat-it-out, overtime victory over Appalachian State an opening-week blip or a sign of bigger problems? We'll find out more this week when the Volunteers play Virginia Tech in the Battle at Bristol."

We're #19 and dropping fast.
I have to say that I stood tall and took my hat off to the Appalachian State Mountain Warriors and gave applause as they tred off Neyland Stadium via the south end zone underpass. Opening -week blip seems a bit unrespectful to the team I saw giving us heck.

Folks, explain to me how a team can win against a solid opponent in App State which was 43rd in RPI & still drop this many spots in any poll?

Top tier teams like Bama, Notre Dame, Michigan, FSU, etc. wouldn't have fallen that many spots with a win like that would they? Why are some of you saying that we shouldn't eve be in the top 20 or 25. That's outrageous. No, we didn't cover the point spread.

No, we didn't play well at all. But, take another top tier team in the same situation as us & I'd bet you they wouldn't have dropped more than one spot. It's because it's UT football. That's why!

Where we are ranked and worrying about it is not relevant. Game one is over. We stunk, but we need a big win Sat. because the pressure will become immense if we struggle. Every coach on the sidelines for UT knows this. Funny how a few bounces, missed assignments and a poor game plan can play with the players head. I am looking for our coaches to right the ship. Frankly it is in their lap.

EL17E

17 is halfway between where we were ranked and out of polls completely. I think it's deserved. For now.
