They won, but should they continue to play this way, they will struggle just to make it to the sweet sixteen.

when it counts, but not the most talented team in the world, certainly not the smartest and very erratic. Not a recipe for the Elite Eight or more, IMO--but we can only watch and cheer at this point. I'd like to see them stop giving up 40 to 50 points in the first half, and stop fouling so much--geez.

Defense has to IMPROVE big time and improve quickly. I think 5 of us from this board could have put 70 on the board against this team today...grant it we would have given up 154!

I agree defense has to improve, but something is wrong when the other team outsoots us 30 - 17 at the line. I just think the officials did not do us any favors.

Definitely not a pretty win, but a win nonetheless. In basketball tourney play, any win is a good win. What's more, we had to play a team we had already embarrassed twice... even though USC isn't a great team, they do have a roster full of scholarship athletes and some good players... so I'll take it. That being said, I'd love to win the next one by 10+.

Not sure that's it's a "rule" that the # of fouls should be evenly called. If you're playing bad defense and are out of the position, you're going to get called for them.

The lopsided foul numbers is actually a trend here lately. I think it has much more to do with our style of play than officials.

We CAN'T have bad officiating going against us in every game.

We sleptwalk through most of the game and had to play against Teddy Valentine and his keystone crew of zebras. I'll take the win. Onwards and upwards.

Yep, hard to play defense when everything is coming up fouls.

Lucky? No. But I've been saying for the past 2 weeks our D has to improve or we wont last 2 rounds in the tournament. IF the D doesn't improve we are in trouble.

Part of the reason we couldn't play defense in the second half was the huge number of fouls the refs called on us in the first few minutes.

It almost seemed like the refs were trying to affect the point spread. At one point I believe it was 9-1 in team fouls. Hopefully, the SEC monitors their officals better than the NBA.

We had to quit playing with any kind of aggression on defense to avoid having players foul out and give South Carolina free chances at the charity line. All this extra space made things much easier for the Gamecocks. I thought the team played great to still be able to pull out a win under such tough circumstances. Hopefully, we get a different crew tomorrow.

Agree. But we have had a problem with getting out on the shooter. The Vandy game for example. There was NO reason that an should have got that many good looks, especially when you know he's taking the shot. The refs have been calling some pretty pitty fouls, luckily we adjusted today. But how long can we give up he big shots and keep winning?

We are the best perimeter defending team in the league.

A "W" is a "W" is a "W."

That being said, we better shoot better tomorrow and pray that Teddy-V draws the second game.

Giving up nearly 90 to a fairly bad south carolina team can't be a good sign. This team is resilient but sloppy, and it could be exposed by a steadier, high-quality team in the ncaa. Georgetown is a pretty impressive team--good strength inside with Hibbert, can make threes (made 17, I think, the other night)--and they play good defense. They lost three games in the big east, which IMO is quite a bit stronger than the SEC. I'd like to see the Vols win the SEC tourney, which is certainly doable this year, and get on a little bit of roll.

stats? You give me stats? Stats don't tell me we get out on the shooter when the game is on the line. You can't tell me we got in the 3 point shooters face and forced some misses against Vandy OR Florida

Stats tell you that Tennessee is the best 3pt defending team in the league.
