Tennessee preseason camp primer: O-line

I guess you and I have simply different definitions of "good". Because I wouldn't rate a single offensive lineman who played for us last year as "good". Maybe you forgot the pathetic display they put on tape against App State and Va-Tech. But that was shockingly bad. And it really didn't get much better the rest of the year. Tennessee just adjusted its scheme by using the RBs to chip a lot more and having Dobbs run the ball more.

Our offensively line was PUTRID last season. I hope like everyone else they improve. But I'll keep my expectations to them just becoming MEDIOCRE this year. You don't go from PUTRID to ELITE in one off-season with only one major addition (Trey Smith) to the rotation. We'll probably not be ELITE along the offensive line until 2018 when Trey Smith is a sophomore, Marcus Tatum is junior, and Cade Mays is on campus. Then we'll hopefully have 3 elite talents along the offensive line.

Right now the only elite talent who might start next season is Trey Smith and that isn't good enough to take an offensive line from PUTRID to ELITE.

Our pass protection has been putrid but our run blocking has been above average except against elite defenses but then again who really runs on Bama?

Some of y'all need to snap out of your battered Vol fan syndrome and have a little faith in your team. I believe we return more OL starts than any other SEC team.

When some of you insist in pointing to our worst outings last year and saying that is all we will have this year, I just have to think how tunnel-visioned that perspective is. At times in the Bama game, we had at least two freshmen OL in the game, if not three. But we are getting folks back, stronger than they were last year.

And guys like Johnson and Smith you have not even seen in a Tennessee game yet.

We have a lot of good options, and our coaches will be mixing and matching until we have our best combo out there.

What talent?

Other than Trey Smith and Marcus Tatum (two guys who haven't really played), I can't think of anyone else in that group who are talented.

Every offensive lineman we've seen play significantly is mediocre at best in terms of talent. And some like Drew Richmond looked like total liabilities last year.

I wouldn't try lining up against the ones you didn't mention. If they will do some under center 3 point stance it will help a lot

Can't stay healthy. Injured consistently last season, missed all of the spring, missing time in the off-season, not even sure he's been doing anything with the S&C program. The kid has talent but he's a total non-factor for the reasons above.

Richmond
Jones
Robertson
Smith
Kendrick

That's who I'd start as well. The only guy who improved IMO as last season went on was Richmond. Our OL as a whole was awful and terrible from a physical standpoint. I think Wells taking over will help a lot. No more Mahoney and his constant rotating and shuffling and no more DeBord playing favorites will be a very good thing.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Tatum eventually beat out Kendrick at some point as he continues to progress.

And I'm letting you know that BK bear is very close to the situation.

Two OL spots are completely up in the air. RT is one of those. I appreciate you letting me know that Volnation user BK bear is "close to the situation," but I will continue to put faith in people I actually know are close to the situation.

I'm glad we have depth...we will need it because our guys are gonna get charged with assault after they beat the hell of of GT!

I'm ready...

None of knows what the truth is. The names you listed look awfully familiar from last season's preseason discussion and 2016 didn't work out so well for our OL.

Let's just let it all play out and discuss it when we have some actual evidence and proof of what this year's OL looks like. Right now we have no idea what that evidence is gonna be.

a year of expieience makes a big difference in college. yea similiar names but when u examine it you had richmond and boulware with no playing expierience now having a season under there belt. jones and hall had very little now are upperclassmen as juniors. tatum has added 20 pounds. coleman thomas is hopefully healthier. Oh yea and they happened to add the number 1 tackle prospect. O line will definitely be improven

Tatum?
Uh, no. He should have redshirted last year. May RS this year unless Hall is still injured. No way he is bearing out a 5th year senior with that much starting experience.

I'm guessing BK knows a little more about this than you. Kendrick is NOT playing guard. He's a 5th year senior and has played tackle every start he's ever earned.

Idk if he's ever played there in a game, but he's cross trained at OG quite a bit over the past few years as well.

You people are idiots. Hall and Jones made alabamas DL look like *****es last year. Saban even praised our OL

Don't misquote me hear I think Tatum could be a really good one but what makes him an elite talent over the other guys. Besides the fact he's barely played and you have no judgment of him yet besides for hearing coaches talk about him.

I agree, there were more questions than there were answers for the Oline, especially after last years Appalachian State game:birgits_giggle:
