Tennessee Preseason Camp Primer: Defensive line

4-3 one gap. Elephant LB. Corners in press man, safeties playing halves. Every stinking play. Davis brought a lot of that back in his second tour. Line on 5317 almost always under with LBs covering the other gaps. And sacrifice size for speed. Linebackers loved it because they never got the backs of their jerseys dirty. Gotta be fast and quick though and be dedicated to it. Our coach got fired cause (he sucked) and he wanted 290 pound freshmen running 4.6. Gotta commit to the bit.
What do you mean whenever you say elephant LB... to me that probably means something else.

Also, that 7 is he a LB/DE hybrid? Now that’s kinda where everyone is going but wasn’t sure if that’s what it was then...

Yeah, Elephant was what Davis/Johnson called that pretty much full-time pass-rushing LB. Belicheck was doing this in ‘86, and Johnson copied him at Okie State and Miami. Take 3-4 people and instead of two-gap attack one gap and tackle a running back if you see one.

Also, the defense was worthless against teams that trapped well.

Awesome yea I remember him doing that... Belichick took it a step further and kinda made that his linebacker prototype... what about the alignment, what is the reasoning behind it...

Yeah. I know the Sunseri disaster has people expecting the worst.

It wasn't just Sunseri, I believe USCe under Muschamp was rough for season one.

The difference this time is that Pruitt has indicated that he will play multiple sets (4-3, 3-4, 4-2-5) situationally.

And the real big difference is that while lyle was a sucky coach, he did recruit some decent speed, something Sunseri didn't have...a de facto death sentence for executing 3-4 defense.

The worries I have with the defense is another new system. Another learning curb which means players will probably make a lot of mistakes but should improve as the season progresses. Will know a lot after the W Va game which has an offense that can run up points on anybody.

Long time Steeler fan here. The Steelers have been in a 3-4 for decades now. It relies on creating pressure, the less people involved in that pressure the better. If you can find some outside lbs that can get to the passer it’s damned near impossible. A big sturdy nose tackle who can clog the middle is also necessary. The big weakness has always been patient QBs. When the Steelers have faced Brady/Brees types that will take exactly what you give them and dink and dunk down the field they will give up yards. I will say the Steelers play it a little differently now than in the Dick Lebeau days, there is more bump and run type coverages than before. Overall if nothing else it’s generally a really fun athletic and swarming style defense.

I’ve never understood why more colleges don’t run it. It creates a lot of confusion and you aren’t going to run into a ton of Brady/Brees types in college. My only guess is all the coverages and different responsibilities for the cbs and lbs are too much to teach a college kid in the time they have.
