"It's important to remember that even though Tennessee is switching to a base 3-4 defense, the Vols might not actually play their base 3-4 all that much. Tennessee might not play it at all in the opener against West Virginia, whose four- and five-wide receiver sets will require the Vols to have more defensive backs on the field. Throughout the course of the season, the Vols might not be in the 3-4 half of the time, which explains why Pruitt has downplayed the switch so much.

Pruitt's defense at Alabama was very multiple and rarely played the same look for consecutive snaps. The Crimson Tide often were in their nickel and dime packages with a four-man defensive front. Sometimes in four-man fronts the two inside players were down and the outside pair standing up and other times just one of the outside players was standing up, and Alabama also played five-man fronts with three down and two stand-up outside linebackers."

It usually takes a couple of seasons for a 3-4 defense to start playing good..............................................just sayin';)

Thats the beauty of what Pruitt brings. Hes been a defensive coordinator at three high level stops and put his system into place so we're definitely not his guinea pigs. Secondly, as stated we can run many different looks, so we may rely on some plays that the team already knew, with the addition of some new ones from Pruitt. That way the defense is not learning a whole new system, but transitioning into one while using knowledge they are familiar with to bridge the gap.

At least the defense will be coached well unlike the last few seasons

You are exactly right. The game has changed. Last year, Alabama had 5+ DB’s on the field more than 70% of the time.

Time will tell if Shoop was overrated. I think Shoop benefitted from Franklin. He fielded good defenses at Vandy and PSU with Franklin. Yet he was historically bad with Butch. Then we have Jancek. In 2015' our defense was ranked 36th. So who really knows?

This year will tell the story about Shoop.

The Good: Our competitors won't know from play to play what defense we are going to run, let alone what play.
The Bad: Our boys will have to keep on their toes so they know what they are doing.
The Ugly: WV is gonna get blitzkrieged! Sacks, Picks, Fumbles and lots of pain is going to be administered by the Orange Swarm!

I remember getting TCUs defensive playbook. It was like a gospel pamphlet. Then I got Saban’s LSU 2001 defense, and I was like, college kids do this?

Haha oh yea.... it’s crazy. I got to sit down several time with Dan Lenning whenever he was at Alabama with Pruitt and through a coaching friend he taught us the playbook... it took A lot of phone calls FaceTimes and meetings with them... I think it was about six months in total getting everything covered... Bama’s playbook is for sure the largest... 400 and some pages long... what I posted was pt. 1 in 4 lol.

How did you get a TCU playbook?

I have his video breakdown 7 DVD’s of him going through his whole defense with film... is it worth it to look into?

It was for the bowl game in 2000. Oh, I was with Southern Miss. It was so friggin easy, and complicated. Back when whazzisnsmen was still the DC. I always hate to say it, but I had a QC friend who was on offense who showed it to me.

I thought it was dumb with all the Cover-1,Cover—0 stuff because I was all into Tampa 2 and the Miami defense (other friend was a GA under Davis at Miami). Now everything’s 1 or 0. And I love it.

And I’m sure it’s gotten much deeper in 18 years. But from what I hear the install is still like 3 days.

4-3 one gap. Elephant LB. Corners in press man, safeties playing halves. Every stinking play. Davis brought a lot of that back in his second tour. Line on 5317 almost always under with LBs covering the other gaps. And sacrifice size for speed. Linebackers loved it because they never got the backs of their jerseys dirty. Gotta be fast and quick though and be dedicated to it. Our coach got fired cause (he sucked) and he wanted 290 pound freshmen running 4.6. Gotta commit to the bit.

Yep,just be caused it failed with him doesn't mean it's not a good defense. Up until 1988 we ran a 3-4 for a long time. It worked for us in the past and can work again.

What does the number of down linemen have to do with DBs.
A nickel we I'll sub a DB for a linebacker.
