This may be a stupid question but when did Tennessee change the color of the Orange we wear? I don't remember this, but I am pretty sure it is different because all of the older pictures look as if the orange is darker.

Also, does anyone know why they cant get the stickers on the helmets to match the jerseys? This all is pretty random, but I was looking at an old Tennessee football photo and it made me wander.

Is there a chance the old picture is faded? Seriously. It appears to be the same consistent orange to me. I think I remember a time in the mid-80's when the numbers had a black outline that may have tricked the eye into seeing a darker orange.

You can start with the exact same shade of orange, but when you do it in or on different materials, it will not come out the same shade.

The Tennessee Orange from back in the 60s and 70's WAS lighter.I remember Id get a new jersey (Jack Reynolds #64 and Steve Kiner #57 were two of my favs) every year from Athletic House.

It was light orange to the point if the sun was bright, if it raining, or you wsat in the upper sections it was hard to tell the numbers ( they were white)

Yea, I thought about that, but it seems like even the jerseys and things that I had as a kid from that era were darker. It seems like the ones they were now have a little more yellow in it. Even though I hate to say that becuase of the recent remarks. Also, it looks like they could find a way to match the helmets, it seems to be more of the older darker color. I also, though not that big of a deal, think painted helmets would look better than stickers

It is pitiful that they are unable to find a shade of orange to go with.

The shade is exactly the same. Jerseys are made from one material, pants a different material, decals are vinyl, none of which will ever match exactly when you are dealing with such a UNIQUE color.
I, for one, do not want to be red or blue or gold or green.

Orange is a difficult color to duplicate on various different materials. One shade of orange may look totally different on plastic versus cotton.

I know but when it comes to the helmets, can someone not figure out how to alter the die so that it comes out more similar, even if it were a different shade going in to compensate

This is true...material like the old "dazzle" made the orange look brighter and lighter in the sun and darker at night. The new jersey materials don't reflect the light in quite the same way.

It is not a die on the decals. They are vinyl. They get it as close as the material will let them.

Which is an ink color. Hard to get a perfect match on cloth.

Yea, I definitely understand the different apparel you buy being different, but it looks like the gear they wear would be pretty exact.

Also, I have heard that addidas has a patent on the color and other people cannot make that exact color so they profit more from gear purchases, but I am not sure about that.

Yea but the vinyl has to be colored somehow (die, etc.). Maybe they should just paint the helmets then. Still, hard for me to believe that they cant add a little more of something to make them match closer.

C. Holloway used to do the the football uniforms when the Vols were in Sports Belle. If it could have been matched, he would have done it.

False, the University "owns" the color that we use. Any company that is liscensed by UT can use it.

It is all Frazier's fault.

So every other color in the entire football world can be duplicated except orange? I can take a green tennis shoe to Lowe's and get a 16 year old girl to mix a gallon of paint to match it and Addidas can't make a sticker the same color as a jersey?

How can they own a color? No one has to ask UTs permission to use 151, lol. Google "Smith & Nephew." Their color is 151, too.

yea, wasn't sure how that worked. Maybe they were saying that since Addidas has a contract with UT that they have the exclusivity with the color while contracted by the university.
