Everyone runs some "spread" sets.

I think it might be helpful if we define "spread". If we're talking about the spread option O that Aub, UF, and Oregon run then no thanks. If UF with all the O talent they had last year can't do any better than 26 ppg vs the SEC while ranking 5th (6 ypg ahead of UT) in total O vs the SEC... then it isn't the dominating O you guys seem to think.

The spread option depends on matching your best skill players one on one with defenders. SEC DC's have now learned how to prevent the one on one match ups... AND the skill players are seldom more athletic than the defenders they face.

OU who is the subject of the thread is has a pretty traditional, pro-set look most of the time. They do not run their QB. They use both TE's and FB's. They depend on a power run game.

Obviously they havent because Florida is still winning every game every year...

I had an epipheny the other day.. Who else besides me think that with the personal we have, we would do very well running Oklahoma's spread offense?

With Bray in the gun throwing to the likes of Milton, Rogers & Rogers, Moore, Jones, Meline, and Stocker why not?? Take an inexperienced line (just like Oklahoma's last year) and let them run an offense that won't require them to block for a long time.

Plus we have Oku who is the perfect running back for the spread offense.. Slip him a few screens and draws and he would thrive in that sort of offense. Plus Bray wouldn't have to think as much, just be a gunslinger like Bradford or McCoy.

Thoughts?

Are you even aware of the fact that Oklahoma's starting QB suffered a season-ending injury (for his second serious injury of the season) last year that could have jeopardized his career? No thanks.

It's football man, it has nothing to do with what offense you run. The main point of this thread is that UT has the personnel to run the spread. Not FLA or AUB spread, but Oklahoma's spread offense that has many pro style, NFL qualities about it. Plus it's alot more exciting to watch. Anyone who thinks it wouldn't be successful is not very educated about football.

Florida has won when their defense has been outstanding...

The one year it was average under Meyer, they lost 4 games.

Correct. They were 2nd in scoring D last year (14.2 ppg) vs the SEC behind Bama. They were actually 1st in total D vs the SEC at 263 ypg. The SEC avg was well over 300 ypg.

The year you referenced, 2007- UF was 1st vs the SEC in total O. It was also Meyer's best statistical O at UF.

Meyer's O started slow when he first took over, peaked in 07 and 08, then came back down last year.

The main point of this thread is that UT has the personnel to run the spread. .

It is a moot point. Most teams have the personnel to run some form of the spread. Almost all teams incorporate spread formations into their O. Is it the best system though? I don't think it is... and especially not for this UT team.

The spread accepts more risk in exchange for a better chance for big plays.

With UT's D this year, the O needs to grind it out and play great ST's. A version of Beamer ball would serve the Vols better than OU's O.

It's never the system.

You can run any system (in college) you want and succeed, if you have the right personnel and coach it properly.

Spread, pro style, wishbone, fun n gun, etc, etc

Doesn't matter

The Florida offense had a down year because they lacked a talented slot ahtlete. They should have moved Rainey to the slot instead of James, but they thought he'd be better at RB.

They realized the mistake, and then exploded against Cinci in the Sugar Bowl.

The offense bogged down because there just weren't a lot of options without a talented player in the slot. Even then, "bogged down" still made it the 3rd best offense against SEC teams and they ranked in the top 10 of scoring offense and total offense in the country.

The offense will score more points in the SEC this year. There are just more weapons now. People coming back from injury like Moore and Debose, new blood at TE and FB in Pridemore, Christian, and Reed, and of course Dunkley, Patton, and Clark in the last recruiting cycle.

Additionally, Hines will play more this year, Thompson is a year older, and Rainey is moving to the slot.

It's not that people have "figured out" the spread option. It's not something you can really scheme away. Your players just have to tackle in space.

They may score more points and they may not. If they have more weapons then they'll have to use them. No one is going to respect Brantley's running ability. It's going to be interesting to see what Florida does and how teams defend them. Tebow was a once in a lifetime athlete. If Florida can keep on motoring without him it will be impressive to say the least. I have a feeling against the better teams they're going to miss Timmy boy.
