Tennessee & Nico Iamaleava are in active contract negotiations ahead of the 2025 season

From what I hear it's Nico's Dad who is negotiating a new deal for him. Nico is happy here but Dad is apparently the one stirring up the trouble.
That’s the story I’d float also. Facts are his father is legally out. Nico is 21.

Bad thing is the $ spent on him is money they could use to bring in another WR, TE or DL.

Some of yall act like he's as bad as Guarantano and Worley sheesh.

I'm not sure what world you guys think a 64% completion, 2600 yards, and a 19/5 TD/INT for a RS freshman with the oline we had isn't impressive. If you think Merk or GMac can do close to that next year than you are completely clueless.

Yeah he's not Hooker (so far), but it took 4 years of Hooker being in college to have the season he had!

My God some of y'all are such drama queens. Did you even read the article? We have this gem where he says it MAY or MAY NOT impact whether he enters the portal. Certainly covering their bases there eh? Nowhere in the article does it say Nico is considering leaving but we have tards in here saying "ok bye!" You think his NIL deal is not going to be evaluated each year? This is likely standard for nil deals which are year to year.

Pete Nakos of On 3 reported Thursday the Volunteers and Iamaleava are undergoing "active contract negotiations ahead of the 2025 season" that may or may not "impact whether he enters the spring transfer portal."
I think the outrage is validated because his dad already pulled this crap at the end of last year. What exactly has changed since the end of last season a few months ago? Did Nico do something special spring practice to command a higher paycheck?

No, he is squeezing for everything he can while he still can. 8 million dollars LOL. I wish I could make that by being mediocre.

True.

What did Hooker make in NIL?

It doesn’t matter if he plans on entering the portal or not. People are sick of the highest paid player in any sport on campus renegotiating his NIL deal every 2 months. I drive around with a Nico Lay in my car everyday. I love the kid, but I’d let him walk at this point as well. I’ve been saying this since his team pulled this stunt in December, he better produce this year. The leash with the fanbase is super short now. His team has destroyed all good graces they had with the fanbase at this point

Lets be fair here: if you remove out of conference games, he looks much worse. Only 9 TDs to 3 INTs. He ranked near the bottom in total yards, TDs, average passing yards per game, etc.

We were a run first team last year for a reason. When Milton looked off, everybody railroaded him. When Nico was clearly off, its because he was young (but paid twice as much).

Interesting timing, given that the Spring game is this weekend and he’ll have a lot of interaction w/ the fans.

Lol hes not even worth the 8 mil they're paying him rn. Im fine with him walking if this is to get a pay raise. with Merk Mcyintire and Faizon coming in we will be fine with or without em.

If any of them are any good, then pay them more money if they as for it. Nico isn’t, so don’t.
Saying Nico isn't any good isn't accurate, though, and there's even less evidence that either Merk or GMac are any better. If fact, by virtue of Nico being the unquestioned starter, it's a safe assumption that they aren't better options. So what do you do? Pay a less talented guy less money to give worse results? It sucks, but this is the world we live in, and it isn't sustainable. It's going to crumble. Maybe in 2 years, maybe in 10. But this current trajectory has a flashpoint.

Without the threat of leaving, what good is a negotiation? The important part is that he’s negotiating. It’s a given that leaving is a possibility.

You nor I have any idea what is going on in these meetings. Nico has been a team first player since he got here so there is no reason to fly off the handle because of an unsubstantiated story with zero real details.

Where is the statistical evidence that Nico is good though? We didn't get into the CFP last year because of his heroic plays. We got in because we had a great running offense and had a favorable schedule.

Absolutely not true. Plenty of contracts are negotiated without the threat of leaving. Nowhere did anyone say Nico said "give me this or I'm gone" that's just a fantasy made up by those with BVS

Some of yall are morons. Let him walk and tank our season? Lmao. I get it. No one likes it, but welcome to college sports in 2025. Adapt or get left behind.
I wouldn't be so certain GMac or Merk couldn't do better. The bar isn't astronomically high.

IF this is accurate then if I were Heupel I’d tell him adios. Effin’ prove something before demanding more.

if Nico were to leave I’d just about guarantee another high level QB would come to TN after spring for the opportunity and money we could offer from what we were paying No 8.

Kid has tons of potential but still leaves a lot on the table. If there’s a Hendon Hooker out there I’d make that trade in a heartbeat.
