With the Circus coaching search nearing an end, it has become painfully obvious that the Vols may have to settle for someone that's never been a HC.
While other SEC schools go after their coach, Tennessee is forced to take a Coordinator and hope it works out:cray:

Coaches know how hard it is to recruit and win at Tennessee and with talent way down, they know it's going to be an up hill battle, just to get the train back on the tracks.

You could always hope that they give Butch a 2nd chance I guess. He was a HC before coming here. See how that worked out?

Worked out well for Georgia.

You know, we were as good as Florida this year talent-wise, yet nobody moans abotu taking that job. I don't think the problem is talent right now, and I don't think that is keeping coaches away.

Fulmer was a coordinator, Dooley and Jones were head coaches. End of discussion.

Tennessee wasn't forced. There were better options than what were now seeing before Fulmer wedged himself in there

I find it frustrating, the fan base came out for the checkerboard Neyland promotions, showed up enmass for the spring game and some fall scrimmages. The national media portray TN fans as asking too much, we show up in monsoon like conditions for LSU, even show up for Vandy in late November. How much more is expected from a starving fan base? Geez, this is Groundhog Day, when will TN get back to being relevant? I'm 56 years old, in the words of the great Tom Petty, (I know from Gainesville) "The waiting is the hardest part."

There was a general list of attractive potential hires and they offered the job to anyone who was not on the list.

Simple as that.

Fans rejected one hire. Afterward, coaches either turned it down or administrators/boosters rejected the hire.

But, none of them were people on anyone's wish list when this started.

By wish list.....I mean Plan A, Plan B, Plan C

Post Butch the job was 7/10, They tried to hire a 2/10, After the fan backlash and the random coach search the job dropped to a 5/10. Fulmer is in that range with his candidates. Had Curries shot higher to begin with, we could have gotten someone better. (Leach is not better)

The only coaches with previous head coaching experience UT has ever hired:

Butch Jones
Derek Dooley
Lane Kiffin
Johnny Majors
Bowden Wyatt

Those without head coaching experience:

Phil Fulmer
Bill Battle
Doug Dickey
Robert Neyland
The guy Arkys arena is named after

I thought P5 head coaching experience was a fairly stupid parameter for being our next coach. The talent pool was guys that would leverage us for more $$$, those that had one foot out the door or were recently fired and the few that might have come if grossly overpaid with long term contracts. Of course a coordinator or up and comer from a lower level are the obvious choices. They almost always are.

This is generally meaningless. Are you really comparing the circumstances of General Neyland’s hiring to that of Derek Dooley?
