Tennessee-Memphis series is back on

Watch the influx of Memphis fans on this board about two weeks before the Memphis game next year. You’ll see what I’m talking about.

Also for a Walmart discounted Blue blood, you’d think they’d have a better top 10 list than that. Memphis’s history is overrated imo.

just saying..... I never said they were a blue blood. I'm not a UM fan of any kind.

I just think their basketball (Mens) tradition is better than UT.

Memphis is paranoid about UT because they know we are the only school who could ever gain a stranglehold on that city and it’s recruits.

I think they just hate living in our shadow. They know who owns this state. I would love to clamp down Memphis, but there’s one thing we can do that Tiger high can’t, and that’s win without it.

I’m not gonna pretend Memphis is Kentucky or Duke, but let’s not pretend that UT is superior to Memphis in basketball. UT has made it past the Sweet Sixteen only one time in its history, and has never made a Final Four. Memphis has at least made multiple Final Fours in multiple decades.

What's the head-to-head record? Most of those games have been played during a bad era of TN basketball. How many major conference championships does Memphis have? How many years were they shut out of NCAATs because only one invitation per conference was being given and when was Memphis in a conference with the winningest basketball program of all time? How many dime store conferences has Memphis been playing in?

Hasn't ever really happened, and likely won't anytime soon.

But it could happen. There’s enough support in and around Memphis that UT a could easily gain a foothold. Memphis State could see a failed experiment with Penny. They were dying and had to take extreme measures with their last hire so it’s not as if they are on solid footing. If Tennessee ever consistently lives up to their potential as a basketball program we could dominate in state recruiting.

In the back of their minds they know we pose the greatest threat to their program.

If UT could "easily gain a foothold," they would have already done it. I don't think UT will ever make any real inroads in Memphis when it comes to basketball. Historically, the Vols have gotten 1 or 2 really good players a decade. Kansas (presently) and Arkansas (in the past) have had the most success making inroads.

I'm glad to see this series resume. It should be played every year.

Memphis worries more about Tennessee than Kansas (Tarik Black, Vick, both Lawsons) or Kentucky (DJ Jeffries, Wiseman, Skal)?

Having multiple Final Fours vacated is also Tiger High's legacy. When you cheat to accomplish that, is it really something to be proud of? Nope.

The AAC isn't that great of a conference for rivals. Cinci and Wichita St. are good, but not really rivals (and too new to the AAC/C-USA remix). Even in the old C-USA, they didn't have any real rivalry IMO.

Louisville was a longtime rival in the metro conference and CUSA for decades. But that rivalry fizzled when Louisville moved on to the Big East and Pitino and Cal didn’t want to continue the series.

UT isnt superior in basketball at all, but the gap between Tennessee and Memphis isn’t as much as the fanbase in Memphis says it is. Memphis can always be a top 25 program, but it is not a blueblood.

Yes. Those teams don’t have recruiting areas. They recruit nation wide.

Knoxville has never been a real and consistent threat to get Memphis kids. I’ve been reading this board and others off and on for 10+ years and there has always been talk that “if UT ever lives up to their potential and gets their foot in the door” then they’ll own Memphis. Still, it’s never happened besides getting a random Jarnell or Tony Harris. There are always things to worry about for a sports team, but UT stealing Memphis recruits is not even close to the top of the list.

Yea forgot about Louisville. They played this past season for the first time since 2014.

The potential is there for it to happen. Tennessee could finally be the program they are capable of being and Memphis could start drawing 600 people for home games.

Part of that equation already started happening this year.

I'm ready to help Penny fill the FedEx forum, when and where can I buy tickets to this slaughter of Penny's team?
