What are the pro/cons of a being the HC at TN?

Pros --
Great Fan base
SEC East
Recruiting top classes
Tradition
Neyland Stadium
Peyton Manning

Cons ---
Playing Bama every year
Our expectation is to win the SEC east every 2-3 years

I don't understand why Coaches don't want to coach here. Are the cons' that bad?

Recently a con has been that we won't pay coaches top money. That needs to change and I truly believe it will on this next hire.

Pro: You will get rich regardless of whether you know how to coach or not.
Should be included in the book " How to become a millionaire "

Pros: the Smokey Mountains are in your back yard.

I would think someone who already has money would literally coach for free. (Come on Vance Joseph, Denver's got nothing on Knoxville.)

Fan base should be listed under pros and cons

Any top job will have fans who demand titles. If you think the Bamas, the Ohio Sts, and the Michigans of the world would be ok with what we went through then you're out of your mind.

Our fans are no more or less critical of the head coach than any other "blue blood" of college football.

If you don’t think the fan base is an asset then go coach at a school that has an empty stadium and see how much money you can make.

Active fan base equals national media attention.

Playing Bama is a pro if you have a coach that is competitive. When Bama was great in the early 80’s Majors would go into kids homes and tell them to come to UT to show they could beat Bama.

A good coach could use that as a challenge. To be the best you have to beat the best.

It's a great job. Hamilton spent years talking down the job so that's where all that BS came from. Talent level has improved dramatically in this state. So that old saying they're at a recruiting disadvantage don't hold much water anymore. Every other team is at a disadvantage when it comes to 3 states (TX,FL,CA).. We also have the largest recruiting budget in the nation. It's all about money. We're cheap, but want to be first class without paying to be first class.

Pros:
Tradition
Recruiting budget
Facilities
Fan support
Reasonable expectations (winning the down East once every 2 or 3 years is not an unreasonable expectation)
Coaching competition (outside of Saban and maybe Smart, your coaching competition is pretty weak)

Cons:
Salary (if UT continues being cheap)
The UT administration, both UTAD and University
Playing Bama every year

Pros:
- Tradition
- Facilities
- Fanbase
- Brand

Cons:
- High expectations
- While not especially difficult to recruit, it is a more difficult recruiting job than some of our rivals have

The next guy stepping into the breach will not get more than two years to produce before the fans want his head on a stake. That severely limits the list of quality candidates willing to accept the job.

I think a new coach would get 3, and any coach who considers taking the job would know that is the deal going in.

Y’all act as if other fan bases aren’t the same exact way.

Exactly. To act like UT fans are any different that Ohio State, Michigan, Bama, Georgia, Florida, Texas, etc. fans in their expectations is disingenuous. If anything, UT fans have been a lot more longsuffering and reasonable given the state of the UTAD the past decade.

7-8 years ago, the cons out weighed the pros.

today, this program is as in good a shape as it's been since the early 2000's. there's talent on this roster as is, today. the East isn't daunting. the vast majority of the "off the field" and culture issues have been fixed (thanks Butch, really...). the foundation building needing to be done when CBJ got here has been done. additionally, administratively we're on a lot more solid footing than we were then as well. not sure yet how good BD and JC will be, but if nothing else, there seems to be some stability there, that wasn't the last few years. and the in state recruiting is light years better than it was 10 years ago.

if a con is playing bama or high expectations, and that's why a prospective coach would say no, then i'd say that's not the guy we need anyway.

the upside for this program is there today, where it wasn't when we were told "no" by so many after Kiffin and Dooley.

#1 Pro...win immediately with current roster and incoming class. Most of class of 18 will stick, regardless of the coach.
