Somebody is not paying attention. I think we struck gold with Pruitt. By all accounts, he is one helluva coach and a relentless and tenacious recruiter who has assembled a great staff of recruiters. If you had not noticed we are now 13 in recruiting and well positioned for a top ten finish after the coaching search fiasco. A recovered roster that has talent with a fresh start will give them a better than expected bounce. It’s a brutal schedule in 2018, but we will fare better than 6-6.

Your may be too optimistic, after all, the Vols just went 4-8 and 0-8 in the SEC......6-6 would be a great improvement, but your probably right, the Vols are going to struggle for several years, and possibly from now own:cray:

I would trade coaching staffs right now. I would give UT 4th Place Dan Mullen and the entire Miss St staff, ie Florida football now ( including our lousy AD-in-training) for Tennessee's coaching staff. I think UT will be the quickest to challenge Kirby and his filthy Dawgs in the East and will easily reverse fortunes against Florida within 2 years.

We lost to Wyoming after he was fired and the players gave up. A minor detail, but also one to blame on Hamilton. Had we beat Wyoming, we almost certainly go to a bowl and Hamilton was so spineless he didn't want that to happen apparently. Just like he fired Butch Jones right before the NCAA so that Jones couldn't go on a run and build support with the fanbase.

Hamilton was a lily livered coward who responded to the worst, most ignorant parts of our fan base, caved, and fired Fulmer.

The OP is 100% correct on this one.

I love the revisionism by people like the OP who pretend like we wrongfully terminated Fulmer. He had 2 LOSING seasons after years of 9+ wins. There were undoubtedly more losing seasons on the way

Phil had steered our program downhill fast by getting complacent

The problem was not Phil's firing but Mike Hamilton's hiring of Kiffin. Hamilton apparently knew that Kiffin could bolt any minute for the USC job. Why not hire someone who wanted to be here and build something?

Then when Kiffin left without warning, we were stuck with Dooley-esque options, who destroyed our program to the extent that we could only get a Butch Jones to come in.

Then, the powers the be settled on Currie over Blackburn and thus the ground was laid for the disaster of a coaching search that just transpired.

Phil needed to go just like Mack Brown needed to go. Some coaches just fade over time.

If we had made a decent hire after Phil, we wouldn't be revisiting the myth of the "undeserving" firing of Fulmer every year

Evidence: How well has it gone for Texas after firing Mack Brown?

Evidence: Lloyd Carr got fired from Michigan the same year as Fulmer and also had a single NC in the late 90s. How'd that go?

Evidence: FSU tolerated years of mediocrity from Bowden and then won an NC in 2013. A much better transition.

Evidence: Va Tech tolerated several years of mediocrity from Beamer and have snapped back quickly with Fuentes.

All the coaches I cite above were highly successful, but different approaches were taken in replacing them.

It was obvious that Fulmer had peaked, it was not obvious that he had to be forced out in the shoddy way he was.

Tolerating a few 8-4/7-5 seasons would have been a much better alternate, but there is a large crowd of delusional idjuts that think changing a coach is like falling out of bed. It is not, particularly when that coach is highly successful.

The problem with Kiffinf as you stated, he had an out-clause in his contract for USC, correct? That should have been a deal breaker for Hamilton.

But even still if you let that slide, the mistake Tennessee made was in going outside the program to hire a new head coach. What should have happened was to promote an assistant on the staff (Chaney?) and at least you get through recruiting and likely keep most of the class together. And if they don't work out, then you can fire that person after the next season and go get your coach.

The mistake wasn't firing Fulmer, the mistake wasn't really in hiring Kiffin either (as we see he is a good coach). The mistake was Dooley and because of Dooley's failures we could only get Butch Jones. Butch Jones is a great man but he wasn't a great football coach. Tennessee has that now and he was hired by a football coach so I think good things are to come.

Bobby Bowden NEVER had a losing season. Phil had two. The wheels were coming off the wagon. Beamer likewise was fired for 7-6 not losing seasons

And for the record, Fulmer only had one legit losing season in 2005, and that was 5-6, because there were only 11 games back then. Add another creampuff and he at least gets to 500 and makes a bowl game. Interestingly that was the last year teams played 11 games.

As for the 2008 season, the team laid down for Wyoming after Fulmer had been fired. If Hamilton had at least waited, that blemish would not be on our proud history.

But you know...Fulmer actually had an almost identical but slightly better win percentage the last 4 years.

Fulmer = 0.580
Bowden = 0.577

2005 Tennessee 5–6
2006 Tennessee 9–4
2007 Tennessee 10–4
2008 Tennessee 5–7

Again, all the available evidence says to ease a guy like Fulmer out the door, not terminate him after giving him an extension in March. Hammy had neither spine nor balls. He should have at least gone down with the ship, but he caved instead.

The mess you see today is the direct result.
