Chuck Smith ill be agreat hire...Can you imagine going into a high school Defensive Linemans home with his credentials. All-American, all time sack leader with the Falcons, NFL consultant to some of the top Defensive tackles.
Well kind of. What I think happened was Clawson came in and wanted to do things that this off. coaching staff wasn't used to doing since they had been there together 4 quite a while. Fulmer heard the pleas from the fans to hire somebody "outside the TN family" so we'd be less predictable and new. I think Fulmer thought that was a good idea to. But w/ the same old coaches being there and probably having a little trouble themselves teaching it... there probably started a little whisper in Fulmer's year that they shouldn't just let Clawson do what he wants. At that point you're just half buying into something and that's the worse thing you can be. You can be a very unimaginative offense, but everybody buys into the philosophy and you at least have a chance. But now the staff is arguing and the players can pick up on that so then they don't buy in. The whole off. lineman changing sides isn't anywhere near as complicated as they made it out to be. But since the coaches (probably the off. line coach) didn't buy in... he probably whispered or made remarks to players that showed he didn't buy in. Which made it easier for the players to not buy in. Learning something new is always difficult. Now imagine guys around you being negative and saying it's a dumb thing to do. Gives you an easy excuse to not buy in, huh?!
Then the UCLA game came. A game Fulmer and most vol fans thought we'd win easy. We lost... so at that point Fulmer pretty much handicaped Clawson. Because yes we didn't run the ball enough that game. And Crompton was a wreck then. But instead of letting Clawson have Crompton work through it and get a hold of it like Kiffin did (yeah i know people hate to give him credit for anything now)... Fulmer stopped the growth and went back to "his way" b/c he felt the heat, but he had a guy that didn't know "his way" calling the plays. So it was just a mess the whole year.
I like Chuck Smith as much as everybody else. But I'm kind of worried about Justin Wilcox not having some of his guys to help him install his stuff. I thought that was the main thing that hindered Dave Clawson. The old staff was there, and they never bought in which made it easy for the players to not buy in. ...I can't help but think since we got Wilcox he should've got to bring a couple of guys or at least 1 he's comfortable with.
