Not til he beats a ranked team on the road.
I know you're just going to move the goalposts, but here you go:

2021 - @ #18 Kentucky - Vols win, 45-42
2022 - @ #17 Pitt - Vols win, 34-27 in OT
2022 - neutral site (bowl) vs #7 Clemson - Vols win, 31-14
2023 - neutral site (bowl) vs #17 Iowa - Vols win, 35-0
2024 - @ #15 Oklahoma - Vols win, 25-15

This is Josh Heupel leading the Vols to beat ranked teams on the road. He has done it at least once every single year he's been the Volunteers head coach.

Go Vols!

p.s. I can already hear the responses, "yeah, but it's Kentucky," "yeah, but it's Pitt," "yeah, but Clemson was having an off year," "yeah, but it's just Iowa," "yeah, but Oklahoma was new to the SEC and they were having QB troubles, and it just wasn't fair of us to beat them defensively when everyone expected our offense to be the thing," "yeah, yeah, yeah".

Heh.

Oh, I have not forgot. Hence the “free agency” related comment that you, for some stupid reason, decided to highlight in red. Do you think he would have been able to accomplish what he did without (college free agency)?

If so, you are in the minority. If not, why post what you posted?
He has gotten some talent through the portal, but what team has not. What he has done is install a different attitude in his players and coaching staff. He has the perfect AD to provide him with the resources needed to be successful. Our entire Athletic Department has grown into a juggernaut compared to other schools and is continuing to grow. Heupel will continue to be successful and play for National recognition as an excellent coach.

I was only considering active coaches, but before he retired I would certainly have listed him. Saban is the only coach whose career was predominantly in the 2000s who I would put in tier 1 all time. Mayyybe Pete Carroll, and Kirby or Day could get there, but as of now Saban is the only no brainer from this century on the all time tier 1 list imo.

I just don’t see how you can put a guy who has never even made a major conference championship game on Tier 1. Heupel just isn’t there yet. He can get there, but it’s no given. I think it’s equally likely that he has already peaked as it is that he ever reaches tier 1 in the eyes of anyone but Vol fans.
I agree. Not 💯% on Carroll but he had major success. It will take so much more in this day and time of college football to achieve what Saban did. All of the coaches throughout history that had his success probably had a similar formula. Within that formula consisted of no transfers and no official money changing hands.

The only way a coach will be able to accomplish that will be a system such as what (what’s his name) did with basketball at Memphis and Kentucky just not freshman.

I completely agree with everything said. Josh took a dumpster fire and turned it into a legit contender. 30 wins in the last 3 seasons. Beating Bama and Florida 2 out of the last 3 seasons. Getting us to the Playoff last season. We may take a step back this season but the future is brighter than it's been in decades. I truly believe he will get us back to the Natty in the next few seasons.

GBO

You left out LSU in 2022.

You left out LSU in 2022.
You're right. When I did the research, looked like they were unranked the week we played them. The loss to FSU in their first game of the season hit them hard in the polls.

But the AP had them at #25 before we marched down and stomped them. Good catch.

They did end the year #16, so there's also that.

Go Vols!

Surprised me when I did the research, but they weren't ranked the week we beat them.
OK.

There is also always the debate of what they are ranked at the time vs end of the year.
They were ranked 12 at the end of the year, which showed they were a good team.

I did more research. Figured out you were right. Modified my response to you. But you're quick, and responded before my edit took. Heh. Good work.

Oklahoma was overrated but Pitt and Kentucky were ranked and also ranked at end of the year. Same for LSU. Still waiting for a W at Florida, Bama or Georgia.

We also must avoid clunkers like last year vs inferior Arkansas team.
