Tennessee has had a lot of great RBs

Of the ones Ive watched.

1. Webb - Best all around combination of vision and athletic ability. Hard to put him #1 with such a short sample but he was that good.
2a. Lewis - Most physically gifted
2b. Cobb - Similar to Lewis
3. Garner - Doesn't get as much talk as those above him but he was a very good all around back.
4. Stewart/Henry - different backs in regards to style but they were both very productive.

Others
Kamara - between the transfer and lack of chances he doesn't make the top group. But he's as talented.
Stephens - Didn't stand out from a physical standpoint, but he made up for that with his effort.
Hardesty - Not sure we ever got to see the best of him. Similar to Webb in that regard.

Did you ever have the opportunity to watch Hubert Simpson ! Powerful and super talented, could have been great, but couldn't keep him out of trouble though.

I don’t know if I would agree that we have had a lot of GREAT RBs. We have had a few great ones and multiple really good ones.

I'd actually put Garner right there with Webb and Lewis and ahead of Cobb. Look at Garner's yards per carry.

I’ll never forget that TD run against Miami. When he broke free I jumped up in the air and put my fist through the ceiling in my family room. I’d been drinking all day.
If you haven’t heard it, I’d recommend you download the podcast “A Host of Volunteers” by Barry Rice/VFL Films. Have an entire episode dedicated to how Powell went from unheard of walk on who gave up his track scholarship to go out for the team, to the starting running back in that game who broke off the memorable 60 yd td run that effectively ended that game. Fascinating story. The episode is #3 entitled “Jeff Powell Roaring down there Greensward!”

Jalen was born to run out of the I with a bulldozer FB leading the way but Butch ran him east/west in the sissy O he installed.
Yet, we had other running backs (Kamara and Kelly) who ran the same plays, in the same offense....who had a much higher yards per carry average both years they played with Hurd. Jalen was a big, strong, talented athlete, but he was a plodding runner who lacked the speed, quickness and general instincts to be a top flight SEC running back.

None of those guys could make the field stand still like Johnnie Jones. The greatest run by a UT back in my lifetime was when he paralyzed the Bama defense in Legion field in 1983. The Jeff Powell run against Miami would come in second.

I thought after the 1970 season one team had to wear white according to SEC rules. I know we wore white for the Bama game in Birmingham in 1971.
That was a huge upset. ‘Burn beat #4 Vols 10-6 in 1972
