Athlon names UF top coaching job in SEC football
by Jeff Barlis
Athlon Sports, better known for preseason football magazines, ranked every college football program in the country by conference on Wednesday.

Their rankings are “based on the attractiveness of the position from a coaching perspective.”

Factoring the school’s tradition, facilities, location and finances, Athlon came up with the following list for the Southeastern Conference …

1. Florida
2. Alabama
3. Georgia
4. LSU
5. Tennessee
6. Auburn
7. South Carolina
8. Arkansas
9. Ole Miss
10. Kentucky
11. Mississippi State
12. Vanderbilt

It is interesting to note that Athlon gave the nod to Florida over Alabama based largely on location rather than tradition. It must have been a difficult decision. Also nice to see how South Carolina and Arkansas have separated themselves from the bottom of the league.

Other tough calls have to include: ranking Georgia above LSU, ranking Tennessee above Auburn and putting Kentucky above Mississippi State.

How would you rank the SEC in terms of best coaching jobs?

hard to argue with that.

Looks like a who's who in winning the past 5 years really. It's not shocking to see us ranked that low, but in 5 years where will we be then?? It's a fluctuating number, year to year.

Proximity to recruits has become THE driver behind all these lists at this point. Otherwise, it's senseless to put UGA that high.

Yeah. Honestly, in the past year or two we could have even been lower. Without winning a championship, I honestly couldn't see the UT job ever being higher than the third best. Third best in the SEC would still be top ten nationally though. Splitting hairs at that point.

It is interesting to say the least. In the late 90's, where do you think we would've been ranked on that list?

Florida should be #1. They are in the best recruiting hotbed in the state (and it's not even close), and their facilities are near the top of the league. Any competent coach should be successful there.

UGA has the potential to be one of the top jobs in the country. They've managed to squander that.

Then why is South Carolina, Arkansas, and hell even both Mississppi schools ranked behind us? I think money and tradition definitely plays a fair role in these kinds of rankings, as it should. Georgia is easlily one of the top 4 jobs in the conference, IMO. Just because they've held on to their own incompetent coach for far too long doesn't change that.

Recruiting base is THE key...but it's not the only factor.

If I was making a list like this, I would have it at about 60 percent recruiting base, with the other 40 percent comprising the "other" factors such as money, tradition, and facilities. If the recruiting base is "THE" factor, then we honestly shouldn't be that high, and people shouldn't be complaining about UGA being number 3 or 4.

What had Georgia accomplished prior to Richt's arrival?

He's lost his edge, but it's not like Georgia had some incredible tradition before he got there. They hadn't won a damn thing in the 20 years prior to his hire. Georgia has one of the most overstated "traditions" in college football.

5 to 10 years ago it would have been a different list. They aré going by recent success.

Tradition at UGA? What is it? If it's easily a top 4 gig in the conference, why have they taken the Fulmer path to greatness of late, when obviously they don't have to?

Proximity was probably not encompassing enough. It's about ease of recruiting.

UGA's "tradition" is Herschel Walker highlight tapes.

Thank You!You cant read anything into these "lists"they are completely fluid. All these lists like.... best fanbase, best gameday experience, best job.All they do is put the teams with recent success at the top.If we won a couple SEC titles we would be top 2 or 3

I put LSU and FL above TN beacuse of their strong recruiting base. I think the top 6 are all debatable but the last three are just lucky to get an honorable mention.

I would say it bases 40% of recruiting base then traditions, facilities, athletic budget, fan support and winning percentage.
