It's a good sign that nobody backed off their commitment before this dead period. Just shows that Butch is going to get most everybody he went after hard. Vols will be a Contender for the East in 14!!

Trying to guess next years record is a crapshoot. But it is going to be fun to watch this class on the field. GBO!

Young Bamboo shoots...

1) Growth rate for bamboo sprouts shows some setbacks over the first year of nurturing...
images

2) Young sprouts are tasty and are consumed in large numbers...they have a low survival rate...
images

3) However with continuous care and watering they ultimately flourish...
images

Do not expect too much next year... but in 2015 this crop of shoots will be a force to reckon with.

Dooley was watering the bamboo so we have a head start.

One never knows what will happen next season. Look at Missouri and Auburn for instance, they were horrible last year and both played for the SEC Championship. Tennessee has always had the pieces to be successful, we just haven't had the coach to put it together. I'm very pleased with the recruiting class that is coming in and some will go elsewhere, but some will come to us which will level out. Going 5-7 this year and having a recruiting class of this caliber, we can only see improvement. I'm so anxious for August to hurry up and get here and I know Butch has his players ready as well.

I am not sure you have your facts straight. Some of the pieces have been walk ons, QBs with little or no experience, DBs who were as slow as cold honey, receivers who could not run correct routes or catch the ball, running backs who could not run faster than 4.5 40, etc. We are recruiting very well and the pieces will be in place with the 2015 class. After 2015, your statement will be reviewed again.

Auburn had way way more talent than Tennessee the last couple of years, their coach was the problem. Tennessee has a huge talent differential. Give it a couple of years and it should start to show

How are my facts not straight? Did we go 5-7 this year? That is a fact. Name me a walk on that has played a lot the past three years (Jacob Carter doesn't count). You say Auburn was not terrible last year. I'm pretty sure they were, because they did not win ANY SEC games last year and Missouri was terrible too. And we have had the pieces. Who knows, Tyler Bray may have been an All-American if someone else were his coach. Cordarrell Patterson is one of the most dynamic wide receivers to ever play at Tennessee, and Justin Hunter was pretty good too. Marlin Lane has never been given the opportunity to really be successful, but has shown a lot of upside when been given the opportunity. I know our defense has been not up to par the past three years, but a lot of that has to do with coaching too. When a team experiences 3 defensive coordinators in three years, your are more than likely not going to be successful. The 2014 class WILL make an impact next season, especially on the defensive side of the ball. When i say make an impact i do not only mean having an impact in games, but in practices as well. Having a ton of guys coming in wanting to play will create a lot of competition for every player, which will only make us better.

For the most part, I agree with you. But you have to separate last year from this year. We had an all pro offense last year with the worst defense in school history. With any defense, we win 8-9 games, but the coaching failed us. This year was different. As far as those walk-ons, Hood and Brewer were starters and former walk-ons. Toney and Swaufford played alot at nickel, and they were walk-ons. Then, add a true freshman CB, who was good, a 2 star starting LB and inexperience at QB and WR, and you have a recipe for a below average year. I am going to guess that Chizik lost his team last year, but they had talent. As far as Missouri last year, Franklin was hurt without a good backup, and their defense improved this year.

Walk-ons that played during last 3 years:

Nick Reveiz
Joseph Ayres
Jacob Carter
Jaron Toney
Devaun Swafford
Max Arnold
Derrick Brodus

This is just the names I remember - pretty sure there are more.

Thank Dooley for letting the roster get so awful that walk ons had to play. Fulmer had a big part in it as well.
