Tennessee football players involved in brawl

Maybe his judgement was hazed by alcohol and he forgot to identify himself as a cop. I don't think he would have been mobbed if he hadn't thrown a punch. Sure he wasn't randomly picked for a group azz whoopin.

There have been absolutely zero eye witness reports or otherwise saying the cop did anything but attempt to break up the fight.

Again, where have you gotten any evidence that backs up your assumptions that the cop threw a punch or was involved whatsoever?

Kids aren't being kids when they are beating some into a pulp and sending them to the hospital unconscious.

Sending them to the hospital is a little much, but fights happen. I have been involved in some bad ones, but that is life. You obviously cannot tolerate it in public, but these things happen, particularly with the younger crowd when booze is involved.

Obviously 7 on 1 isn't (or whatever the odds were) isn't right no matter what the guys profession is but I agree with you.

I just talked to a reservist here in our shop who is a Jersey State Trooper and his words were, "I don’t know if it varies from state to state but I wouldn't think it would, if we are off duty and have been drinking, we have no rights to pull our gun, flash our badges, or interact as law officials."

Now before I get bashed, I am not saying this guy did any of that, just answering the question that several have asked about him being able to do that.

Thank you, sir!

I'm not understanding how anyone can attempt place any blame on the cop. Off duty or not, he tried to do what he is trained to do. If he had sat back and watched the fight, he'd be criticized for that as well.

And as for all the "some cops are d*cks" defense, don't you find it kind of hard to be a d*ck when you're laying in the street unconscious with a few goons kicking the crap outta you?

Looking more and more like we need a curfew.

Off duty or not he tried to do what he is trained to do?

He was in a bar at 2am and he was off and probably drunk. So lets change the scenario. You are in a car accident and a surgeon is in a bar across the street from where you wrecked your car. The surgeon is ****ed up Jesse Jacksons checkbook and comes out and decides to do heroic surgery to save your life and he instead injures you because he is drunk. Is this not his fault.

I am not blaming the cop but I think we need to find out what happened before you just attack the players. What if the cop was drunk, stuck his cop nose in someone elses business and then started running his cop mouth. What if he had his gun with him and he pulled it out and someone knocked him out. I say they may have saved someone's life by knocking the cop out.

Just my opinion.

Also, if you knock someone out I think it is a given that your friends get a free kick.

No, if the cop was flat out drinking/drunk and that comes out it changes the entire dynamic. As has been stated before, off duty cops cant go around doing the same things they can do on duty. He HAD to do something to provoke this. No one gets mobbed by 7 people unless you do or say something first. 1 person? Sure. But for 7 guys to say "oh hell no he didnt just do that" you had to do something pretty significant.

I love how just because the guy is a cop (off duty, mind you) that everyone thinks he is an angel who did nothing wrong. Just because they see "cop".

and i just "love" that "everyone" thinks he is guilty who did do somehting wrong, just because they see a "cop"

Im telling you as an eye witness, he started it.

@wbir Rogers and Myles just released on bond. UT Medical Center says off-duty officer is in stable condition. Full update on 10News at Noon.

If this thread lasts long enough, some people will claim the cop is also responsible for the kennedy assassination

Are you guys serious? Witnesses have stated that 7-10 guys who they identified as football players knocked him out and them proceeded to kick him while he was unconscious. There is no defending that. Everyone involved should be kicked off the team and out of school.

And I'm glad your not an administrator...

Lets just face the facts volnation that about 60% of our team is made up of morons. :eek:k:
Let us also understand that these young men are very bored at the moment and anything that will increase the testosterone level in the players is going to ignite like a small bomb. I will also ask why was 18 year old young men allowed in a bar at 2 am. This bar in my opinion needs its doors nailed shut.

Agree that kids get into fights. That I understand. But attacking someone 7-1 or whatever it what and kicking him while he is unconscious is bad (if the reports are true).

Read it and weep, ladies.

"I don’t know if it varies from state to state but I wouldn't think it would, if we are off duty and have been drinking, we have no rights to pull our gun, flash our badges, or interact as law officials"

At this point no one knows what the cop did or didn't do. Making him irrelevant unless he offered and escorted these boys into the bar.

you've never heard of "mob mentality", huh?

off-duty comes up, tries to break up fight. one of the thugs pushes him, then others join in. escalates pretty quick, brah.

young and dumb. if it really was 7-10 people beating up one man the players should be punished severely. If the cop did in fact pull his gun I feel slightly less sorry for him, especially if he did it without announcing his is a cop. Someone sees a gun in a loud bar...you fill in the rest. I am NOT saying it was the cops fault. No one deserves being beat to hell by 7-10 guys. The players should be punished, and if the cop had any wrong doing he should be as well.

To me, the only one that shouldbe in real trouble is whoever actually knocked the guy out. Hughes or Myles. They will be convicted of assault most likely. Everyone else has minor BS charges because they had no real reason to arrest them. Dooley will be able to sift through this and UT has some skilled attorneys.

that is not what i said. go get your bi-focals and re-read my first post.

WOW cotton. He never said anything about the cop trapping the players. He is talking about idiots who think it is cool to pick fights in bars. Those same people that might be envious or dislike UT football players. Putting 2 and 2 together now, cotton?

There are people who tend to fight in lots of places. Alcohol seems to increase this tendancy. Seedy settings seem to amplify them. You young whippersnappers see to believe this adds up to some conspiracy between local marauders and the police force that forces athletes into desparate situations.

From the facts as I know them now, it sounds as if some college kids put themselves in a bad situation and then acted stupidly. It happens in pretty much every college town every weekend, and while I'm not excusing it, your line of thinking absolves the players of responsibility.

They weren't trapped. They went out drinking at a dive club and got in a fight, and a cop got hurt. It happens, and not because the world is against athletes. It happens mainly because college kids do dumb things.

How the hell did I become old?
