Tennessee Final Scrimmage News & Notes

It’s not debatable. No one in the football business would claim that WR is a top 2 important position. Not even close.

WRs aren’t prioritized in the NFL draft. They’re not prioritized in terms of pay. QB, OT, CB, Edge, and DT are all more important. Those positions are bigger draft priorities and get paid more.

Here’s a link to the average NFL salaries by position: ESPN.com: NFL - Defense gaining on NFL payroll scale

That’s telling as to which positions are most important.
Look at the last 10 NC then look at their WR’s.

Look at the last 10 NCs and look at their OL, DT, and CBs. If you’re going to win a NC, you’d better be good at every position.

2023 Michigan was elite on both lines, but just average to good at WR. 2021 & 2022 UGA was elite on both lines, and just average to good at WR (probably closer to average). 2020, 2015 Alabama, and 2019 LSU were elite everywhere. So were 2016 and 2018 Clemson.

Ask an NFL GM if WR is one of the two most important positions. He may be able to hold back the laughter.

Kirby has the talent up front to be able to keep 2 safeties deep. He challenges us that his front is gonna stop our run game bc he knows that’s what makes us go. I don’t know if I remember us hitting a single deep ball against them the past 4 seasons. We have to run the ball against them consistently and make them bring extra guys in the box or we won’t have any success. We had moments last season where we ran it, and it was 1 possession game in the 4th quarter. We didn’t get off the field when we had opportunities. I think this season we need a complete mental and philosophical change when we play them, similar to Florida in 98. I know Heupel doesn’t like to deviate much, but this game in mid September needs to be different.
It helps UGA that their DBs maul our WRs on every play without the refs doing anything about it.

QB,LT,DE,CB, in that order. Then you need as much talent as you can put around them. I see us as being able to recruit a team like LSU or Clemson more than I see us matching the BAMA or UGA championship model..

Nice JA 2 AJ

The clip begins after the play has already started, so it isn’t possible to tell exactly what position Jefferson is playing or what the entire route was. However, he has been getting reps in the slot during the practice sessions open to the media. Jefferson was covered by defensive back Edrees Farooq on the play. Farooq enters his sophomore season and could be named the starter opposite of Andre Turrentine at safety.

There are a few other players you can make out on the field, as well. On offense, besides Aguilar and Jefferson, you can for sure spot freshman receiver Travis Smith Jr., freshman tight end Jack Van Dorselaer and transfer running back Star Thomas. It looks like Lance Heard (No. 53) may be at left tackle, but the number is a bit blurry.

On defense, outside of Farooq, you can see freshman edge rusher Mariyon Dye and redshirt freshman linebacker Edwin Spillman. Two other defensive backs are in frame, but neither give a clear view of their number.

Agreed. I think folks have been a little unfairly critical of Elarbee. So far, he has done more with less, but now it looks like he is developing guys and building depth. Oline, more so than any other position group aside from maybe Dline, takes time to develop. If a program is healthy, aside from the David sanders-like athletes, it generally isn’t good if you are having to play a bunch of first or even second year guys. It is a grown man position group.
Couldn't agree more, and the issues we've had the last couple of seasons on the O-Line has been at Tackle. They've been dinged up. Run Blocking has been great so Elarbee hasn't been near as bad as some think. The O-line this season has real potential to be special. It's the most talented it's been since Heups arrival and it's got some depth.
