For those who are or have been a student at UT, what are some of the good dorms on campus? And on the other hand, do any of the dorms suck? Where did you stay and how was your experience?

I'm in the middle of applying for housing now with some friends and just wanted to get a feel for those who have been there before me. We are pretty set on doing the suite style dorm. Any feedback is much appreciated.

About to be a Jr. at UT. Spent my first two years in Reese. The rooms in Reese are identical to the ones in North Carrick. The difference is that NC is a bigger building and has a different layout for things like where the pool tables and ping pong is. Both are in good spots, and presidential is a great place to be first year. The courtyard there is always fun. I would recommend those. Unless you have a lot of classes on the hill avoid clement and greve.

Spent my first year at Melrose which they closed down after my freshman year. Have since spent every year in Vol Hall and like it a lot except it's a lot of $ and I have to help my parents pay for it lol.

But if you can afford it and know some good friends to be roommates with, it is the best dorm on campus.

Completey forgot about Vol Hall, but yeah if you can get that try getting in there. Im living in Gibbs this next year so I can eat the great food. Might try those two as well, but those are long shots bc people were signing up to live in those back in spring semester.

I don't think freshmen are eligible for Vol Hall. (I assume the OP is an incoming freshman.)

I lived in Morrill as a freshman. It wasn't too bad for a freshman dorm, and it's suite-style like the OP is looking for.

Freshmen cannot live in Vol Hall. Stick with the Presidential area, and you'll be fine. They aren't the greatest, by any means, but they're manageable.

Wow, Melrose Hall, that brings back memories. I was a transfer student and got placed in Melrose my first year. Met some of the greatest people in the world there, but the dorm sucked. Heard they renovated it (also heard it got shut down), not sure which is more accurate. I lived in the corner above the boiler room- no air conditioning but plenty of heat. The best thing was the courtyard basketball court and being right next to Hess (I think that's the name) Hall (referred to as "the Zoo" when I was there)- checking out the freshman girls.

As of this past spring it sure did not look like it had been renovated. No one lives there and nothing goes on in there, but I hear from people who go in there are still desks and stuff in it. Well actually the only thing that goes on in there is that people randomly play instruments in there.

lol ... I've heard it! .... it sounds like they're keeping band camp students in melroach this summer ... every time I walk by somebody's in there practicing drums or trombone or flute .....

to the OP, if you're transferring try for Andy Holt (don't know anything about vol hall) ... if you're a freshman, do like they said ... try for carrick or reese in presidential ...

Melrose was good to me...I got a big room with an A/C...somehow I was only one of 4 people who got that.

But Justin's right on that- Gibbs, then either Presidential, then Hess. Don't consider anything else.

Also, if you want to drink, never consider Vol Hall. They have RA's there and no matter how old you are you'll get busted.

Once you get past freshman year, get an apartment or a house in the Fort. It might not be luxurious, but it's a fantastic time.

Freak really ought to pin one of these dorm threads sometime, because they always come up over the summers.

Thanks for all the info so far guys.

My dad stayed at Melrose in the late 70s/early 80s and said they had rats in the showers. So its good to know that Melrose isn't even an option anymore.

Sounds like Gibbs would be neat to stay in, but I doubt many freshman are put there. I'm thinking it's going to be either N. Carrick or Reese for us. I know those two are pretty similiar, but does one have any advantages over the other?

gibbs is the athletes dorm so its unlikely you will get in. i was in Reese last year and i would go with that because its not nearly as big or high up as Carrick. I remember last year whenever i went to South Carrick the elevators took forever. with Reese your no higher than 5 floors up so if your in a hurry the stairs will do.

Yeah, I stayed at the top of Reese the past two years. A lot nicer during fire drills than running down much more than that like you would possibly get in NC.

Umm there are not too many advantages really..NC has quite a collection of Dvds to rent. Im struggling to think of anything else that makes it any better.

Shoot for Gibbs. The chances aren't great but if you get in there, it's a great time.

I lived in Reese my freshman year and than lived in Gibbs for 2 years.

I lived in an apartment off campus after that.

North Carrick was fine my freshman year but I was with friends. I would not like its layout if I didn't know the person.

I then moved my Soph year into Morrill b/c it was co-ed, and two girls I was dating lived there. I liked the layout because you could ignore ur roommate b/c he was on the otherside of two large desks backed up against one another in the center of the room.

Junior year I went with 3 friends into Andy Holt apartment 'dorms'. I liked it, but my roommates were really dirty so we didn't have maid service cleaning the bathroom area. :ermm: Otherwise it was fun.

I lived in Clement my freshman year. It's a good location if you go to the strip and the Fort but pretty far away from everything else. This year I am in Vol Hall and it's close to everything for me being a Geography major. North Carrick is decent and a good location by the TRECS. You'll be fine basically anywhere you go.

Granted it was over a decade ago, but I made sure to have my housing application in before I went to school my senior year. The earlier you get it in the more likely you will get your first choice of dorm. And by all means choose gibbs first.
