I've heard the knock on Butch initially has been the lack of Southern recruiters on staff. I don't think we can judge this staff yet--I think Tommy Thigpen, Willie Martinez, and Jay Graham are proven commodities. We know they can pull some great prospects. I'll admit I don't know a lot about Azzanni but all indications are he is pretty good and has connections in the state of Florida--I think the guy will do well here. Elder, Mahoney, and Stripling I'm sure have ability. Should we add another strong proven SEC recruiter? I think we let things play out this first year and see how Butch's second FULL recruiting class looks..there is always a chance a change can made with the staff later. I think our class will be great next year...the only expectations I have this season are getting bowl eligible and winning a bowl game.

I started this thread because I read that Tony Basillo was knocking Butch already because of the lack of Southern recruiters---I think he is an idiot and way off base...JMO

Where did you read this? I am not doubting your word but alot of posters on here tend to put words in the local medias mouth and give them a bad rap for something that was taken out of context.

I read his blog for the last week and seen he said he thought we need a few more recruiters on staff but nothing that says southern recruiters and nothing that was negative towards CJ.

I agree.

I read it as well and took from it that he is simply saying there are not enough proven recruiters on staff - which is true. If that means he has to get proven SEC assistant coaches to recruit well it will mean changes need to be made in the staff - which is also true. He said finishing 10th or worse in recruiting each year will not get it done - which is true. He stated that Butch had the choice to hire coaches in the beginning of his employment that were proven recruiters, but chose not to so that he could keep his staff essentially together - which is true.

I think Janick is a solid recruiter who's coached LBs in the SEC for GA. He knows what it takes but he's just got to prove himself as a DC and he'll roll recruits IMHO. I think the change to look for is at WR coach. If things don't go well on the recruiting trial in 2014, then that's a spot that could get upgraded to someone who's a great recruiter.

We got Marquez and Jenkins to commit after he was hired. I know he wasn't the lead recruiter for either, but CZA clearly is not a liability. . .

I never said he was but he's the odd man out at this point IMO if we need another star recruiter. I'm not saying he can't be that guy but its really hard to tell anything about him because he's bounced around so much. At WKY he put up a very impressive offense as OC and everyone says he's a great techniques teacher. I just hope he stays here for more then 1-2 years.

While I know recruiting is the lifeblood, I like the idea that bUTch kept his successful staff in tact. I will be pumped to actually see a well coached, disciplined well schemed team play. I also think he's got a pretty balanced recruiting staff and its not particularly fair to judge this years class ranking-next year will be the year to judge.

Basillio is lacking in ANYTHING Southern...he's one to talk! Martinez was at GA & Thigpin at AU. Graham from NC...played at UT ...coached at SC . Seems pretty Southern to me! Tony talks out of his butt anyway. He just talks to hear himself rattle.

I've said all along that CBJ cursed or blessed himself by keeping his old staff. Time will tell.

Saban has turned assistants over and so has Miles. They are probably the two most successful recruiters in the SEC over the past 6 years. Both are from Michigan.
