Tennessee Bowl Game speculation (merged)

Where/who we play isn't nearly as important as the practice time...

I agree...the game is secondary to our coaches having another month of practice with the returning players. As my five year-old daughter frequently reminds me (courtesy of the Bearenstain Bears), "You get what you get and you don't pitch a fit!"

The Outback Bowl has jacked the Vols once or twice before--maybe in 2003. They have a history of this...

Is there a chance Hubbs missed on this one...I know he doesn't miss often, but it's just so out of the blue and no one else is calling this.

I was in Panama and didn't get to see the game, I would be at this one if it comes thru.

Panama is awesome! I was down in Santa Clara this past summer and I can't wait to go back... I'm actually enjoying some Duran coffee even as I type!

I politely disagree. Other than the guidelines that say SEC EAST #2, why should we be there over some of the others? I think head to head should come into play. If UK or UGA goes, then I am with you. If Aub or Ole Miss goes, I can't agree. Head to Head should mean something in my opinion when teams are tied. Another thing to consider is the fact that if we beat UCLA, then we are not having this conversation. Or, make the kick at ALA. Or, not let a mediocre AUB team beat us at home. We are 7 and 5. It's not like we are 9 and 3 or 10 and 2 and getting hosed. I will be disappointed if we fall below Atlanta but it is what it is. Not to mention that for all the talk CLK has done, this could be one way some people decide to retaliate!

I think Auburn's 3 and 5 SEC and 5th place in the West record should mean something too

One factor that I think is in play here is the bad economy. I believe these bowl officials would like to keep teams as close to their base as possible. They know if they started sending teams far from their campus that attendance would be way down.

Also to be honest, other than OLE Miss, UT hasn't traveled very well. I traveled to ALABAMA and there wasn't a whole lot of Orange. There was practically no orange in the swamp. OLE MISS was good and UK was good but not as much as normal. I am not sure the demand to go to Tampa for UT fans would be great either. Not to mention, we had ZERO sell outs this year. SO, economy may very well be a huge factor.

WOW, BIG drop of the ball by Mike Hamilton IF UT doesn't go to the Outback or Peach.

I did forget they were 3 and 5 in conference. That does make it worse. It does seem very odd that a team with a losing conference record can get to a New Year's Day bowl.

New Year's Day bowls have lost esteem lately too since the BCS spreads out their games to go to Jan 8.

Because there has been a general precedent set. SEC East is relegated to Outback because the West gets the Cotton. SEC West would have BCS, Cap1, Cotton and Outback?! No way it should go down like that. If you're gonna have conference tie-ins, then keep to it. I could understand if Cotton and Outback had a flip, but thats obviously not the case.

If you want to play the schedule game, Auburn lost 5 of 7 to end the year and lost to UK and UGA who we beat. This comes down to the shady crap that the Outback Commitee ALWAYS pulls. Its absurd...

Music city bowl would be an absolute insult, worse than '03 when we were 10-2 and got shafted with the peach bowl....

That's the 2nd time today I've been reminded of that...thanks.

Now I need to go punch something.

It's only a rumor folks...The independence bowl would love nothing more than to matchup Auburn against Iowa St....Cheezstick would get to play the school he coached last season.

Not sure it is that. Could be retaliation for things CLK has said. Although any publicity is good publicity according to some so you would think a bowl would love having CLK there.

that would require Slive to step in on the SEC's behalf and make sure the tie-in's are still working. I'm guessing he's not really going to do that

I did not read the entire thread. Did you reveal your source or provide anything to back your claim?

No...probably not. I'm sure Slive prefers his hemroids over Kiffin at this point.

Auburn with Gene Chizik is nationally irrelevant. No one would watch Auburn/Wisconsin.....maybe the rose bowl parade would get a higher rating. It still boggles my mind that we lost to them again....

So is this official? If not then people are getting worried for nothing. If UT makes the Outback bowl then its a good thing (and I still think they will). If not then there is nothing we can do about it. This is a rumor at best and I have heard all kinds of rumors and "sources close to insert bowl name here" about teams going places. Until it is officially announced nothing is set in stone other than the automatic bids. Come this time tomorrow or Sunday, Monday or whenever the official annoucement comes and UT is in the Outback bowl the worry will be for nothing.

Guys calm down. I dont have any sources or any of that stuff but I do know that the Outback cant take Auburn without the cotton taking an SEC East team. If the Cotton agrees 2 take an SEC East team then the Outback could take Auburn. If not then they wont. This was put into place after UT got screwed by the Outback 7 or 8 years ago. We will be fine. We will not fall any further than the Peach Bowl.
