Tennessee and ...

For NCAA it is die hard UT in FB and BB(they made this leap for me during the Pearl era)

NFL it's the Colts(started with Peyton and I was a season ticket holder when i lived there)

There are teams i really like in both sports and want to do well unless they are playing the above: Butler BB(again lived in Indy and went to multiple games), Duke BB (grew up a huge fan of Coach K and really respect how the program is ran), Titans (too bad they have to be in the Colts division!).

NBA i can respect a good game or player but there isn't one of either i specifically root for. Other sports my interest has dwindled or was never there in the first place.

I have a friend who claims he hates every college football team that isn't Tennessee. I think that is one way of looking at it.

I think rooting is okay for teams you are connected to. Town you are from or school you went to or who your dad cheered for when you were growing up.

Most Duke bball fans and NYY fans fit none of those criteria which is one of many reasons to despise those teams.

For the sake of a marriage it is fine to cheer for your wifes team as well unless they are playing yours. Your wife should fully cheer for your team. The house divided crap is from folks with bad marriages whose primary identity and loyalty is in the wrong place.

I agree, I think you should have a viable reason to root for multiple teams, especially NCAA teams. I for one have always rooted for the Vols. I am from Tennessee and will always root for the Vols, the USMC took my life in another direction, away from Tennessee. I ended up going to school at A&M and loved every minute of it, but I still remain loyal to my home state and my beloved VOLS. I simply cannot stand the people I grew up around in Chattanooga that have lived there their whole life and root for bama or uga for some illogical reason like “that orange is ugly”. Be loyal, have pride and have a REAL reason to root for a team, not superficial.

GO VOLS and Gig'Em Ags!!

It depends. However, I'm not really a fan of "I'm a fan of UT football and UNC basketball" or something of that sort. Sorry, just not buying.

Like with my dad's side, they are from Michigan. They have lived in Michigan forever. The whole family is Michigan fans. I like Michigan, watch their games, slightly read their boards, and always cheer for them. Except in the Citrus Bowl 2002 and NCAA Tournament 2011.

It's Tennessee first and foremost in college. I love Michigan, but that's how it is. Orange runs in my blood.

In pro, I've been a Braves fan since I was very young. They (and I might killed for this) are my favorite team to watch and follow, and that includes Tennessee athletics.

I don't have a favorite NFL team. I honestly don't. If I did, I guess it'd be the Colts since I like Peyton Manning.

NBA, it's strictly my favorite players. LeBron James, Deron Williams, Blake Griffin. I don't follow one team (although, and this might be bandwaggonish, I am starting to like the Grizzlies).

I think a big variable is have you rooted for them through the good and the bad. If so then I have no problem with whoever anybody wants to root for.

There's one exception. As someone above posted I also live in Chattanooga and absolutely hate people who have lived in Tennessee their whole lives and have no connection to the university but root for Alabama. Thats inexcusable.

Just waiting for TennesseeFan07 to come in here and defend his honor, lol. I imagine the 07 is because we were pretty decent in 07, so that's when he decided it was ok to become a fan.

I have no idea who his new NBA team will be, since the Lakers appear to be losing it.

Absolutely agree with this. Someone needs a really good reason to be a fan of a school in just one sport. I have an example or two of teams I root for in a secondary way in only one sport. One would be U of Virginia basketball because of their coach, Tony Bennett. I generally don't like the school, but my dad was an assistant for Tony's dad, Dick Bennett. Tony's a great coach and better guy, and I'll root for him wherever he coaches.

I'd also say the guy who said earlier he's now a UNC basketball fan b/c he's a PhD student there is OK. I'd be much more comfortable with just saying he likes UNC now, albeit less than the Vols. Embrace all of the sports--he very well may have meant this and only mentioned basketball, not sure. I'm pretty much OK with someone rooting for anywhere they've gone to school.

i live in chattanooga too and i dont know if you have noticed or not but there seems to be a lot of people in this town that are not Tenn fans... you see more GA, ALA, and FLA stuff then you do TENN stuff... kinda makes me sick. The GA stuff i can understand a little more than any other just because we live right here on the border and in five mins your in GA but the other two teams i have a hard time with

im a tennessee fan only, only pull for other teams when they play teams i despise.nfl been dolphins fan for 38 years and went and watched them play titans in 2003 and became a titan fan too saw both in 2009.as far as nba sixers was always my favorite in 70,s and 80,s but i have come to despise the nba for many reasons.its boreing and the same teams have been to finals and won.and mlb i always liked houston and pittsburg but those teams cant or want pay entire team what a few yankee players make a year so dont watch much anymore.the biggest problem i have is all the people who are bandwagon jumpers, whoever wins that is who people pull for and some of you on here jump the wagon so to speak.i picked my favorite teams when i was three cause i recieved a few hand me downs a dolphins jacket and a pirates shirt and i liked 76ers and astros and the other teams, because they were rivals to the teams that all my uncles and cousins were reds, celtics, cowboys fans and i had to be different.

Ut straight across the board. But here is where I differ from many. I have season tickets to FB for tennessee, memphis, and arkansas. (i know, it kills the pocketbook) Wife and I make it to knoxville atleast twice a year. She, along with her entire family are huge donors and fans at Fayetteville, so we go with them 3 to 4 times a year. My dad, is an Memphis state Alum, and I bought those tickets for he and I 6 or 8 years ago. He battled and won stage 4 cancer last year, so I plan to go to a few games with him this year.

The great thing about my wife and I, she has plenty or orange in her closet, and I have a red shirt or two as well. We have a pact that she cheers for Tennessee and I cheer for Arkansas, (extremely hard for me) with the exception of the weeks when the two play. I make her sleep on the couch then!

Long story short, I am at a college football game 10 or 11 weeks out of the season. But MY team is in knoxville. Fire away if you wish.

I think its funny people consider Yankee fans "bandwagon." People forget about the 80's and early 90's for the Yankees.

That's fine but if like my BIL your other sports teams are some of the winningest of all time I am going to choose to ignore your fan card. Keep in mind my BIL watches sports more often than most and he knows more players and stats than most so i'm sure he thinks he's a big fan. For pure sports knowledge I'd agree he is a fan of the game but i am not buying his loyalty when he always sides with historical winners that are not connected geographically or anything else.

Edit: also the Yankees picked up a lot of fans following this period...you being a fan before that is what makes your case as a fan. Lot of fair weather birds out there.

There are a lot of fair weather Yankee fans out there, same goes for a bunch of other teams in multiple sports

Plus I'm a Redskins fan, and they have had only a few winning seasons in the last 15 years :cray:

I am that guy, and I will say that I like them but less than the Vols (in all sports. except men's soccer. I'll cheer for them over anybody in men's soccer. and. . . I dunno, maybe lacrosse?). I'm already planning on making it back to Knoxville for some UT basketball games, and I have no plans to go to UNC basketball games, even though I'll live there. But I will cheer for them when they're not playing the Vols. Same in football.
